New DP tank - Few questions

Post by RichGSR »

Hey all, I had a few questions about a new DP tank I'm setting up.

Tank is a 10g and should be almost done with the cycle.

Questions:

1. Do I need aeration or water current for the tank? I currently have an Aquaclear 20 doing the filtration for me (btw, is this enough? I do weekly water changes). Should I get a Koralia or powerhead for more water movement?

2. I'm looking at getting 2 DP, possibly 3, and perhaps an amano shrimp or two. Is that too much bioload for the tank?

Thanks guys!

I added a small bubbler. Hoping this will be enough to aerate the tank.

Going to get the lil devils tomorrow so I'm pretty excited.

i have 5 pea puffers in a 20 gallon tank with an aquaclear 20 hob, and two sponge filters and it works great.....they have so much fun in there....i have some large river rocks that they hide in, and a few anubias plants in there as well,
but i found that this set up given them alot of o2 and circulation filtration.....

good luck on your tank....

Ok, looks like I only lost one DP instead of two. So my 10 gallon now has 2 dp's and 2 amano shrimps.

Question: Can I get any other tankmates? I thought about getting another DP but I think 2 for a 10g is enough.

What about tetras? Do you guys think that I might put too much bioload in the tank if I got 3 tetras with the 2 dp's and 2 amano shrimps?

Tetras would be too much on the bioload, since they have to live in schools and then you'd need a lot more space to accomodate them. Shot glasses would be okay, I guess, as long as they're not painted, or if you use aquarium sealant to cover the designs.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

I've decided against the tetras and just got another DP. They all appear to be very healthy are are eating well.

The shot glasses have some designs onthem but are mostly just clear glass. Thinking about going to the store and just getting plain glass ones. They make perfect caves for DP's and I found one of mine sleeping in one this morning.
