How much marine salt in grams???? 80 litre tank

Hi there as in my other post i have just bought my first F8 and want him to be happy, so have some marine salt and am planning to do a very slow gradual change to brackish from fresh.

I looked in all the topics i could but struggled to find what i wanted, question would be if i am to end up at 1.004 over a period of about say 10 weeks, how much marine salt in grams should i add on a 50% water change once a week in an 80 litre tank? Sorry if i have confused you.

so effectively i would be looking at between 5-10% of total salt needed for brackish 80 litres per week for 10 weeks. Anyone know roughly how much in grams per week that would be? Obviously i will get a tester but a rough ballpark figure would be a great start.

LOL I've done it before for Americans, but there's no way I can figure that out for litre's/grams when I just got out of bed hehehe.

Rough guess though would be to bring your tank around 1.004, my guess is that you'd probably need something around a cup (teacup) of salt.. this is just doing crazy rough math in my head. So adding a teaspoon or so per week (keep in mind when you do water changes you'll be taking salt back out) will keep you easily in a "safe" range of not raising it too fast. Getting a hydrometer or refractometer will obviously tell you exactly where you are, but that's a good place to start.

He he thanks mate, ikeep forgetting that others arent using the same measurements as me. What ill do is one tea spoon of marine salt in a 50% water change once a week and test it regularly even if i keep it quite week it will be better than just fresh water for the puffer i suppose. Cheers

Hi Carlos

Slowly raise your SG over months (or weeks if you prefer but don't exceed .002/week). I would start at 1.001 in the first month, 1.002 in the second month and so on until I get 1.004.

So, if your are doing WC of 50%/weekly, you can change freshwater to 1.001 with no problem. It's a 80L tank, did you discount substrate, rocks etc? Will you change 50%? So it'll be 40 liters to change, right? Mix 280g of salt (21 TABLEspoons, each tablespoon = 13g of salt) with 40L of freshwater, using tablespoons of salt like this:


Not like this (instead, you would add much more than needed!)


After that, keep doing water changes of 40L adding only 10 tablespoons of salt to keep SG at 1.001 (3,5g/L).
Continue to make the math to achieve (at 25°C): 1.002 (4,9g/L), 1.003 (6,2g/L) and 1.004 (7,5g/L)

Make sure the temperature of your tank is the same of the hydrometer calibration, or you'll get wrong readings.
