Some issues after upgrading the tank.

Post by By_a_coo »

Hello everybody!

As I said in another thread, I did upgrade my F8's tank from 25G to 53G! It's very large!! My two F8s are looking happier now, BUT I tested the water yesterday and I got:

Ammonia - zero
Nitrite - 0,25mg/L

I kept the filter working in a bucket with the fish inside for 3 days while I was setting the tank up. The filter is working in the new tank for one week now. Before I upgraded the tank, I was keeping the SG at 1.005 and slowly started decreasing it to freshwater (during some weeks before planning the new tank). My plan now is to set up a planted low-end brackish tank, that's why I turned my BW to FW, just to let the plants to take hold for one monthe or two.

Should I have to cycle the filter again? Is it probably a mini-cycle? Both puffers are eating and acting normal, but I noticed one of them having one cloudy eye, could it be due to nitrite level?

Thanks in advance. :D

Sounds like a mini cycle, I would do some extra water changes, use Prime or Amquel if you can get it and just keep an eye on everything. No ammonia is great, and the nitrites should go down quickly.

If the cloudy eye persists, a little Melafix will help. It should go away with the nitrites, though.

I decided to re-cycle the tank (I guess it will take only a few days). I put the puffers in another place where I can do daily water changes.

Well, this is not the time to show my tank ('cause I melted the plants away treating them in a bucket to get rid of cyanobacteria - they're looking really bad but they already show some new leaves), but I want to share with you the upgrade.

Old tank - 25G

The new one - 53G
