Canister filters are only used for keeping chemical filtration in, not for mechanical filtration, in SW.

If you want to minimize the live rock and add some color you could always get an external refugium, i have one in line with my protein skimmer and it has the deep sand bed, macro algae, a feather duster and some pretty reddish live rock.
