Here we go all over again... Homer & Marge Pt 2

Well, another updated...and i have to say i'm almost ready to give up ... since for some un-known reason i seem to have suffered almost a complete loss of all the fry i had this morning when i checked the tank... leaving around 7 - 10 still alive out of close to 70 - 80 fry

Any way, i'm just curious, how much do you guys feed your fry per feeding??? coz i've chalked the deaths of the fry up to either the tank being too warm, since its like 30+ Degree C outside, and the tank seems to hover steady around 27 - 28 Degrees C, OR they aren't eating enough, which could be down to 2 possibilities again... either they aren't eating the frozen brine shrimp coz its not moving, or they aren't getting enough to eat...

So i guess all in all a very steep learning curve for me with a fair amount of losses, so hopefully if round 2 does come along i might be slightly more prepared... either way, i guess i'll just have to wait and see what happens with the remaining few that survived so far...

the temperature is not a problem, if enough oxigen is in the tank.
but living brine shrimp is a must. i have never seen puffer fry eating something dead. if you change water some times a day, i think they have just starved. don´t you have living brine shrimps in your shops? here in germany the proffessional shops all have living brine shrimp.

That's a shame you've lost so many Homer, like Martin said try and get some live Brine Shrimp asap. If you think about it looking after 10 fry until their bigger is going to make things a lot easier for you, can you imagine trying to house 80 as they grow!

BTW I've read that people that breed Betta's/Sieamese Fighters take the yolk out of a boiled egg and then put it in a spray bottle (see pic below) with tank water and shake it up. Then you jusy spray the egg solution onto the water surface and the egg yourk powder is so fine/small that the baby larve can eat it. I'm sure this should work for Puffer Larve

Okay, so i just jacked this extract from another thread on here (hope you don't mind puffertt77) and was wondering, has any one tried this trick before??? and does it work at all or does it not work with puffer fry???

If it works for Betta Fry I cannot see why it wouldn't work for puffer fry. It might degrade the water quickly though!

I bought some liquifry to feed my Daphnia and the ingredients are eggs an egg derivatives, yeast and derivatives of vegetable origin. From what I can tell the egg is not eaten by the fry, but is meant to encorage the growth of infusoria which the fry eat, I dont know if this helps you at all, but there is is lol!

of course there are some fish families whoes fry is eating liquifry and also self-made egg derivates like for example the colisa family and some bettas. but puffers will never eat something like that.

Yeah, see the problem is shops don't make much money from selling live brine shrimp in Hong Kong so its not always readily available at my local LFS' unless i goto the fish street which is like 45min away... but luckily the LFS i know is helping me get some going before he sells me the eggs so hopefully later today i may be able to get some live brine shrimp at last (fingers crossed)

Yeah, i'm now trying to focus all my energy into the last 9 fry i now have in the small tank to see how they go, although with that being said i noticed in my main tank about 3 - 4 fry which seem almost even healthier than the ones i've rescued. So i've decided i'm going to take this chance to do a little experiment and see if the small fry in the main tank will survive by some freak accident???

hi,
the ones in the tank look healthier because in an old tank they will always find some living liite food like little worm, crustaceans and so on. as long as you do not have any food to give them, you should leave them in that tank. but as soon as you are constantly getting living brine shrimp you should get them out of there caus the adults willt eat them as soon as they findd them.

A quick update: i decided to keep the babies in the small tank since from the looks of things, they are eating the frozen baby brine shrimp and didn't want to risk having the parents eat them or me not being able to find them again... as for the few that are still in the big tank, they seem fine? although it looks like a few more went missing, which is what led to my decision of keeping them in the small tank rather than losing more fry... especially since i should finally be getting some live baby brine shrimp today (if all goes to plan)...

My LFSs rarely have live food available, besides pest snails, feeder fish, and ghost shrimp. I'm not surprised that Homer's doesn't.

Okay, after a long time not updating, it seems i have all but 3 fry left that seem to be thriving, which i guess for better or worst is a good thing since at least i have 3 that survived i think??? any way to my surprise, it would seem Homer and Marge got up to no good last night and dropped another lot of eggs and i guess they decided they didn't like the slate piece and dropped them at the same place as last time...

So basically speaking all thats left to say is; here we go all over again, lets just hope that the fry don't start eating each other like last time, and that the they grow big enough for the move before the end of July...
