They are suggested for high-end brackish, but most people go all the way marine because it is easier.
If you mean low brackish, I wouldn't suggest that. In truth, they can live their whole life in freshwater... it just won't be a very long life.

We don't recommend GSP in freshwater.

They don't stay healthy in freshwater, it shortens their lifespan and they are just very suceptable to diseases, etc.

As far as tankmates, GSP's range all over the board for temperment.. they can easily kill most tankmates, but being rather awkward, fat fish, an aggressive tankmate can easily harass them way too much. So if attempting it, something non-aggressive, but fast is your best option (some people put them with chromis when they are full salt, things like that). But at any time, don't be surprised if a GSP bites a rather large and vital chunk out of any tankmate.
