Do River Shrimp / Ghost Shrimp have live young or eggs?
Hey Guys
I've noticed that a fully grown RS in my tank has what look like either little black eye's in it or ltlle black eggs. I'm leaning towards eye's as they're the same colour as the mums eyes.
They're in the back end of her underneath her belly, she kind of does this fanning thing with the underside of herself, she also does this with loads of food in there aswell?!
I'm hoping I'm going to have loads of free food suddenly appear in my tank soon
What do you think?

I've had a TON of ghost shrimp reproduce.. but I couldn't tell you if they were eggs or live when they came out. One day there were eggs in the belly, the next, they were gone.. then I didn't notice any 'new' shrimp for a few weeks... but then again, I wasn't really looking for babies.. which would be hard to find, since they're tiny and clear.

I believe they produce eggs that the females carry on their legs, so you would be able to see them. However whether you can raise them or not depends on the species of shrimp you have. Some hatch into young that are small replicas of their parents and can be reared easily while other hatch into lavae that require salt water and a fair bit of effort to raise.
Off the top of my head i believe that ghost shrimp fall into the latter category. When I researched this i was told that cherry shrimp are quite easy to raise as they hatch into small replicas of the adult that can be raised in the same tank.

The egg's seem to be on the underside of her belly, there is salt in the tank and although it's Aquarium Salt and not Marine salt it is keeping the shrimp alive (I found they died in my SW tank so the SG is to high in there)
I'll leave her be and see what happens, there's no other big fish in there just very small guppy babies so what ever her young come out like (mini mes or lavae) they should be safe (unless the adult shrimp eat them)
I sprinkly powdered flake in the tank so that it's small enough for the guppys to eat so hopefully the baby shrimp will be able to eat it to
I'll keep you posted
Thanks again guys

Dadof4 has raised ghost shrimp. Try shooting him a PM.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Alright puffert,
Good to see another London puffer nut.....
I've read the info on the link that Christemo gave and its really good.
Sorry to go off topic but I've read a few of your posts and am wondering what lfs you go to as they seem to have some cool fish.

I've got 2 LFS really close to me that are ok and get the odd thing in that's cool (that surgeon fish relative), but the other 2 that I've been going to that always have good/unusual stuff in are:-
Wetpets
71 Victoria Road,
Romford,
Essex RM1 2LT.
Telephone (01708) 744880.

This is where I got my Frogfish from and is where I filmed the brown Dogface, Porcipine, Striped Burrfish and Imaculate puffer. They also had a few rare Triggers that I've never seen

This is where I got my DP's from, they've got loads of great stuff here and have a huge Ciliards section as well as the Marine section and tropical section. They've got the huge Guinefoul that I filmed in there and I've also seen other puffers and a longhorned Cowfish, they also had a Mappa Puffer in but unfortunatley it died a week after the journey into the UK. I've never seen what you'd call a normal Siamese Fighter/Betta in there, they're always an odd/rare colour and have different fins to the norm. Oh yeah they also had a Fahaka, 3ft Arowana and a huge swimming turtle that had a weird nose that must have been easily over a foot long (I think Flashdan just bought one for really cheap)
Like with most LFS they've both said they can get what ever you want if you give them the Latin name for it. The only difference is I believe these guys really could get you anything you wanted (espesially ADC)
