My New Auriglobus modestus ... (edit--R.I.P.)

Post by John P. (TT 225) »

I've kept SAPs and GSPs before. This is my first Auriglobus modestus. Very similar kinetic behavior as the others I've kept, but I'm really intrigued by the coloration of this one. My boys have named her Petra.

I live in Southern California, and aside from DPs, GSPs, and some mangled "red eyes," was unable to find anything else. After calling a bunch of stores, I was able to find these sold as "Avocado Puffers" at Nature Aquarium in Santa Monica.

Anyhow, sorry for the poor picture quality; I don't have access to an SLR anymore. Also, the aquarium isn't in peak form since I trimmed down the lilaeopsis a couple weeks ago, and the water's not perfectly clear as a result. Hardware specs: ADA 45 centimeter cube, CO2 injected, etc., ADA Aquasoil, Rena Filstar XP1. & a 150w Aquamedic metal halide pendant fixture with an ADA bulb.

Lovely tank, lovely fish. Welcome!
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Nice setup... i love Aquascaped tanks like that... too bad i don't have a very green thumb when it comes to plants, especially in an aquarium...

Welcome to the forum, and yeah that's a beautiful tank you have. I have a modestus myself, and I'm sure you'll enjoy having yours as much as I enjoy mine. I wonder if yours will attack your hand as vigorously as mine does when you put it in the tank. :)

I keep wondering why often in the trade you see them called Avocado puffers. That's how we had them at the LFS where I work, but it's really a poor common name as avocados are from warm areas in the Americas, whereas A. modestus is from around Thailand and Vietnam. Just another case of common names being pretty much worthless, I guess.

Thanks everyone. I've been keeping planted tanks since 1994 and this one is by far the least time intensive. I've stayed with tetras, rasboras, microrasboras, and blue-eye rainbows pretty much until now. Needed a fish with personality. I haven't had a puffer in 15 or 20 years!

Well this is sad ...

Noticed she wasn't swimming around this morning, but was in a big hurry for a conference.

Came home, and found her under the aquarium stand. :(

Are these puffers jumpers? It's an open top tank, but the water level is about an inch from the top so I certainly didn't expect this.

Bummed.
