Which IP meds to use

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Which IP meds to use
If you were thinking you might need to do an IP treatment, and had access to Jungle Parasite Clear fizztabs, or Metro+ and PraziPro, which would you choose? Or is it pretty much six of one, and a half-dozen of another?

Re: Which IP meds to use
If I had a choice, I'd use GelTek Ultra Cure PX.. it works, and it has the huge bonus of tasting good and the fish willingly eat it (nearly every other medication you have to fast the heck out of them to get them to eat treated food).
I've never used the fizztabs and personally can't see how they would work, but as I said, I've never used them.
Prior to the Geltek product, I've always used a Metro and Levamasole (pig wormer) combo and that worked every time (purged worms within a day or two, weight gain and improved growth over the following weeks), but must taste horrid as its always a battle to get the fish to eat it.

Re: Which IP meds to use
I tried Jungle's Parasite Clear and it didn't do much for me at all. It didnt cure the ick or the ip it was supposed to. I wouldn't recommend it! I'm now trying PraziPro. Hopefully it works better this time! If not, GelTek is next.

My first choice is gel-tek because it works and the fish eat the food soaked in it. My second choice would be prazipro. I would use it if gel-tek was unavailable or if I needed to deworm quickly and have to wait for gel-tek to be delivered.
Both are excellent products. Never tried anything else.

OK cool, thanks guys, I will take all of what you've posted into consideration. We carry Metro+ and PraziPro at work, but maybe I can talk my boss into getting in some Gel-Tek - I need my discount!

how long does gel-tek usually take to work?
and are you guys soaking freeze dried food in it, so it soaks it all up or will frozen food be just as spongey?

Re: Which IP meds to use
Freeze dried is better if your puffer will eat it. Annabelle won't eat freeze dried foods so I used a syringe and put it in pieces of shrimp, scallops etc. Gel-tek usually starts to work within 24 hours. That's my experience.

Re: Which IP meds to use
I've used the Gel Tek on my Turgdis and GSP. The GSP took it with freeze dried shrimp and the Turgdis I had to inject it in to night crawlers.
