I've been looking for over a year to have some join my lone SAP. They finally appeared on a Columbian fish list, and my husband's friend was able to import some. Now I have 7 in my quarantine tank! It was difficult to not take them all home as the ones left behind watched me with those eyes! (Anybody looking for some, Mark is in central Indiana & I know he will ship. )
We got the 7 home and settled into their tank last night. They are active and eating well. So far, so good.
I have read the article on IP's, but I need a little more information....do you automatically treat them for IP's as a precaution? Should I wait a few days to administer treatment, so I will not stress them more? What would you all suggest?

Hey lobowind, it might be a good idea to treat them now just to be safe. It'll save you having to treat the main tank later down the line if one does have ip
I'd love tio see a vid of that many swimming together

That is what I was thinking, too. I just wondered if I should give them a few more days to get acclimated? Is there a general guideline or suggestion on how long to wait?

The treatment plan really depends on the medication. Directions should be followed as per the package, and don't underdose, because you might only kill off the weakest worms, leaving the resistant worms to take over.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

As LilGreenPuffer says you should go by the guidlines on the meds packet you decide to get
The Med I got was Hexamita by Esha and the way you're suppose to treat the tank with it is for just 3 days. Day 1 is 25 drops, day 2 and 3 are 12 drops each.
As Bollo was in a real bad way I treated the tank with this stuff for 7 days and actually added 20 drops a day just to make sure it killed all the IP. I also used Epsom Salts at the same time.
You could give them a few of days to acclimatise to their new tank/surroundings, I don't think the IP will do much in them 3 days that will not be cured by the meds you add on the 4th day
Ps In the US you can get Gel-Tek Ultra Cure PX which I've read on TPF is great stuff!
I've used Prazi-Pro, but I found that the fish wouldn't eat any treated food. So we have some Jungle Parasite Clear we can try, and it says that the treatment may be repeated up to 2 times with 48 hours between treatments. When I read on TPF that some have treated 5-7 days, I wondered if this was with a day off in between treatments or every day? Just was checking.
I might try and find some Gel-Tek Ultra since I could douse the food and directly feed to the puffers. I just was nervous to treat them so soon after getting them because I know they won't eat much the day after treatment, and they could use a more fattening up. They are doing really well, though. Happy puffers playing in the current and hunting snails.
