You need to go educate your LFS about krill. It's time they learned the truth:

yeah i will definately do that. i wonder how long he was fed krill though.. poor guy. my last puffer ate frozen brine shrimp alot, he loved that stuff. unfortunately, the place i bought him from wasnt very good at taking care of f8s.. and he came down with a horrible case of ich not even after one day, the place told me they had problems with controlling ich in the past, and wouldnt even offer any advice other than tablets to use. needless to say, i dont do business with them anymore, and i told every one i know never to go there to buy anything. every animal in that place is sick, i really wish i would have found out sooner. anyways, thanks for all of the much needed and really helpful advice everyone, you guys rock! i wish i would have come across this site sooner, maybe my f8 would still be here. rip::bumble

Always take what the fish store says with a shaker of salt.
Half the time, they know nothing about the fish and just want to sell them to get the profit$ from them.

I've found this with a lot of LFS, the only one that seems to know loads about puffers that i've come across is Aquatic Design Centre on portland dtreet up london. There's a girl in there who knows loads about them. They also refuse to sell fish if they are not feeding etc

It seems to be common lore for LFS to feed krill to puffers. Even here in Japan all my local LFS seem to live by this. I wonder where they get this from?

I work at an LFS, and I've heard this same thing. I believe this is because 1) the LFS can't make money off you if you're buying puffer food at the grocery store instead of from the LFS; and 2) frozen prepared foods such as those made by Hikari are considered parasite free, whereas there is always a chance that the oysters or clams you buy at the store are carrying a parasite or some other such toxin. (I believe this is a valid point - ask Dadof4 about what happened to him and one of his puffers.) In addition, I think people who hold this belief reason that, well, if the fish is saltwater, and it eats crustaceans, and if krill is a saltwater food item and is also a crustacean, then logically they're a good thing to feed puffers. They have never heard of lockjaw and have never had to deal with it because the fish are only in their stores for a few weeks at most.

It didn't have anything to do with a mussel from the lgs. He figured out it was from feeding live food bought at walmart.
Dadof4 wrote:More than likely vermiculite, I never thought of it. Just an FYI, these were bought at the dreaded Wal-Mart.....Only place in a small town to get bait at 11PM when you suddenly realize you are out of worms. I found a nice place to get them, and they are grown organically, in an even smaller town about 25 minutes from here. I'm going to go talk to them Monday and see the operation they have set up. I know there are a few people in central and western Wisconsin that may be interested in this place to get 100% chemical free worms. If they turn out like advertised I'll post their contact info.

I think it's easier for LFS to just toss in a few krill, than to do all we do to insure proper diets for our fish.

totally true with the krill thing, sorry i havent been on lately, i've been uber busy. but i did indeed read the article. i wonder if i should print out a copy & give it to the guys at the LFS.. hmm.. i dont wanna come off as being ignorant, but i mean -- im only trying to help benefit the fishies there! ill say something for sure the next time they offer to sell me krill for my beloved puffer.
he's doing super by the way - picking up gravel & flinging it a few inches is his new way of begging for food.. but im not falling for it! :D silly puffer!
