feeding your puffer peas

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

feeding your puffer peas

Post by side19 »

ok, i know its not a dire emergency, but i figured since i t as a health related question i'd ask it here. how do you feed your puffer peas if its constipated? and how many? i think Ra might be, he keep looking like he's trying to go and then a really small very very thick dark brown piece comes out, and then it looks like its snipped off, and then whats left goes back inside of him. is this a sign of constipation? i'd still like to get him at leas one pea so that even if he's not it will ensure that he won't. so can anyone help me as to how to feed your puffer peas and how many to feed (Ra is about 2 inches long)

Every now and then, I give them to Shakespeare just for the vitamins, he's the only puffer I have that likes them. I just pull the skin off(so it doesn't get spat out in the tank, which WILL happen) and toss it in, he goes RIGHT for it.

Shelby loves them. I peel the skin off too just because it does get really messy,

well i tried it, i pulled the shell off and stuck it in there. he didn't seem to interested in it when i was holding it for him, he nipped my finger instead and then swam away. i noticed him take a bite out of it a few minutes later when it was sitting on the bottom of his tank, and then spit it out, but when turned to go get a drink, and when i came back the pea was gone. he must have eaten it, i looked all over the tank to see if he just moved it. either he finally decided to be a good boy and eat his veggies or he's learning to be sneaky and hide his greens so he can get dessert. lol

Frozen is best, canned peas are cooked so they are devoid of some minerals, and aren't as healthy.

Possibly a stupid question, but doesn't nuking the pea kill of some of the nutrients??? or is this what every one does???

i read a few article after searching the word peas in the forum and a couple people said they'd nuke them for under a minute just to thaw them out so they could be fed to the puffers. i have no idea what it does as far as nutrients are concerned, i never thought about that. i was just going off of what i was reading from the few posts that said how the people feed the peas to their puffers.

Thanks for that info... and i guess if the pea is used more for constipation, then maybe the nutrients don't matter too much???
