My new bought GSP has some greyish spots on its tummy. The color turns darker when I either approach the tank, feed him, or try to play with it. Is it scared or is it just stressed out? Also, he seems discomfort in his tank. He's always swimming up and down toward the corner of the tank. Are all these signs of sickness of the fish of some sort?
Please help...
thanks
Black spots on belly???
Re: Black spots on belly???
Hi wongalfy and welcome to the forum. The darker tummy can be signs of stress with the GSP. Can you tell us a bit about your tank size how long it has been set up salinity and your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates.
Re: Black spots on belly???
Hi Trekenk,
it is about 1.5 inch
10 gallon tank
its been in the tank for 3 days
The tank was previously occupied by other fish for at least 6 months, so it's fully established or cycled.
I am gradually adding salt about 0.02 gravity every week. I tested the water condition yesterday and everything looks fine still.

Re: Black spots on belly???
Ok sounds like he is just settling in. As I said before the dark belly can be a sign of stress, I have also seen some that do it when eating. Make sure you are adding marine salt (not aquarium salt). Also you are going to need a bigger tank very soon, the sooner the better. GSP need a minimal of 30 gl. by themselves. Great article under the learning tab up top.

Congrats on the new puffer
Give him a week or 2 to settle in, they can be funny little things.

Re: Black spots on belly???
I just saw a 30 gallon tank on kijiji for 30 bucks the other day, i also saw a 55 gallon for $15 a couple of weeks ago. If you look around it shouldnt cost you too much to upgrade tank size.

A 55g for $15? That's just too good to be true!
Maybe that was a typo, but SG should be raised by .002 per week, not .02. If you're raising your SG too quickly, you could have killed off the cycling bacteria and caused a mini-cylce, or even a full cycle. Do you have a test kit? I didn't see any parameters.
Swimming up and down in the corner, or "pacing the glass," is a sign of boredom. Puffers require heavily planted and/or decorated tanks - sort of like an in-tank playground.

Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."
