GSP pop eye update

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

ok i thought about this- water nitrogen supersaturation (gas bubble disease), so i turned off my powerhead and turned back on my smaller round bubbler, to see if that helps, and i am also still continuing the melafix every morning. it got all better, but then started to cloud over again (like it did before it bulged out the first time) it hasnt bulged out again yet, its just cloudy still, so i am hoping continuing with melafix and turning off the power head will help. i will change the water again in a day or 2, and see if that helps, and if it still continues, ill do more melafix, i dont know what else to do, its only in 1 puffer and only 1 of his eyes, the other smaller puffer is normal. thats the only thing i can think of that would cause it, because it started shortly after i first put in the powerhead. thanks for ur help :)

That's strange, that it came back after a water change. Have you ever tested the parameters of your tap water?
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

My guess is that he may be clumsy and hitting it on things, causing secondary infection. Shakespeare has a blind eye from a bad scrape the led to cloudy eye.

ok another updarte, no i havent tested my parameters of my tap water, is that the hardiness? well, i treated with about 2 bottles (almost) total of melafix, over several weeks, it got better but now it is coming back. im not sure why, its the same eye, ont he same puffer, its only that one eye on that one puffer, its driving me insane! i cant seem to keep it from happening. i change the water frequently, i test my tank levels, i just dont know what else to do other than just keep treating over and over with melafix. i went thru a bottle and have a tiny bit left from the 2nd one... so i guess ill start again tomorrow after i remove the filters. any idea of what could be the cause? i have turned my powerhead off to rule out the gas disease. :(

It sounds like it might be time to start treating with something like Maracyn, as the Melafix doesn't seem to be doing the job. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in and tell us whether or not this is the thing to do at this point.

Testing the parameters of your tap water just means checking it for the same things you check your tank water for: ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH, etc.

ok i have tested it for nitrites and ammonia before, they were both 0. i still have some of that stuff i used before left (i believe its the maracyn), the stuff i wasnt supposed to use i guess, it got rid of it and i switched over to melafix and it still came back, maybe i didnt treat with the first antibiotic long enough. this really sucks i dont know how else to help the little guy other than continue medicating the water forever.. not sure whats causing this, no other fish or puffer is sick. i dont know how it would be my water quality, its always clean, unless its something other than the obvious. :?

It's a good idea to check parameters about every other day, unless you do w/c as obsessively as I do (60% 2x/week), and I still check mine every three days. Have you ever tested for nitrates? If you haven't done any tests lately, you should do them again. Things can change overnight.

i change it once every 1-2 weeks, about 50% each time, and if my levels ever go above 0, i change immediately. i have not tested for nitrates actually, ill have to pick up that test kit tomorrow. should i start with the other meds? or just continue with melafix?

If things in the water are prefect, baths may be a more effective approach to treatment, as the problem may be localized entirely to the damaged area.

A bath is just a short dip into a smaller tank or container of water that has some sort of medication in it, or is at hypersalinity or hyposalinity.

Better not do anything until one of the gurus tells you whether Maracyn is the right choice of action in this case.

To do a bath, you just put a ten gallon dose of your med into a single gallon of water, and leave the fish in there for an hour or so each day. You need a freshly made bath each day. With bacterial infections, all diagnosis is more than half guesswork, unless you are a microbiologist who can actually culture a sample.
