New puffer idea (Canthigaster jactator)

i still dont know what puffer i want and now i have 2 choices again

I don't know to much about the Jactator but it is cute. If anyone on here has one and could tell me more about them it would be very helpful. What i really need to know is if the tank conditions are the same or not. I know the Jactator is from Hawaii and Valentini from the Indo-pacific.

pretty much the same care if i remember right. The jactator stays a little smaller though and I think is a bit more aggressive (may be wrong here).
With all puffers though, they all have different personalities...

yes, the jactator is endemic to the hawaiian islands. the valentini is indo-pacific. basic care is identical.

dissections of jactators show the majority of their diet in the wild is algae and also includes sponges, tunicates, and small crusteceans like amphipods, copepods, etc. IME the valentini diet is almost identical

Okay I've kept Canthigaster jactator for 4 months now.
During this time I've noticed many great and unusual qualities that are not found in other puffers.
Mine doesn't bother my coral,is extremely friendly(eats from my hand),eats shrimp and marine snails like crazy,
is very hardy and best of all won't get that big.
They do nip fins but if you have a fish with enough aggression to fend for itself you'll be fine.(My blenny will give him a good chase if he bothers him)
I have mine on nerite snails,hermit crabs,store bought raw shrimp and he picks at my LR occasionally.
I'm thinking about getting another one and seeing if they pair up since in the wild they are found in pairs.
Since this photos I've integrated the lighting into the hood,have redone the LR but that isn't the focus.





The guy is so active it's really hard to get a decent photo of him
Sorry that I'm not adding more explanation of the puffer,what they do in the wild and so on(and cleanup of my grammer ),
I need to get to bed since I'm still 16
Edit I forgot,my tank params are exactly what real SW is with a temp of 82F

Here are the params last I checked when he was tiny and in my 7 gallon a few weeks ago.
Nitrates 0
Nitrites 0
PH 8.2
SG 1.026
Temp I had terrible swings,78-84
Fed 1X a day,roation of shrimp,snails( crushed since they have a hard shell) and an occasional hermit.
Overal quasi reef safe,has eaten all small inverts and discovered that my birght yellow SPS like sponges are tasty(Noo!)
I raised him up from a tiny guy,slightly bigger than a grape sized guy,not sure if that effected his diet(I have softies,doesn't touch them) or not.
Where he was caught it's mostly SPS there,only softies are octocoral,tons of snails and random inverts.
I'm not sure if getting him young,having a already dominate fish in the tank(the blenny was waay bigger than him,was there first and took a few nips at him)
kept him from becoming a fin eating puffer but overall i'm happy with my somewhat reef safe puffer.
