Marine Salt and Aquarium Salt

Hey Guys

Yesterday I bought a load of River Shrimp and put some of them into the 67g for Naboo and Bollo to eat and I put the rest into my other small FW tank I have with the Blue Crayfish in it. The guy from the LFS said that these river shrimp need brackish water and no heater to survive. I thought that I would'nt have them long so I didn't bother putting Marine salt into my small FW tank to make it Brackish. 6 hours later all the shrimp in the small FW tank were dead! Today I've looked into my 67g and there's a couple of the river shrimp that are still alive and swimming round and eatting!

The only thing that's different about the 2 tanks is that I have put Aquarium Salt into my freshwater 67g tank to help the fish stay healthy

Is this what has kept the river shrimp alive?!

I know that to make a tank Brackish you need to use Marine salt but I have read about people using normal table salt to keep Brine Shrimp fry alive (they don't live for as long but it works better than no salt)

You know, that's interesting. I have the same problem. I can't, for the life of me, keep my shrimp alive in a freshwater system. I put a handful in my brackish GSP tank and they thrive, the GSP is too small to eat them. Everything I've read on them says FW with occasional forays in to brackish water and FW breeding.

From what I understand, there are a few species that are sold as river shrimp. Some are freshwater and some are brackish.

One thing i learnt from one of my LFS guys who breeds his own shrimp (FW mostly but some others too) is that shrimp dont like water changes that much. I wonder if drip acclaimation helps?

I've kept the rivershrimp in the BW they came in for a week with no heater and an air pipe and they're still alive

I think I'll just do this from now on
