Would 1 inch Mappa be ok in a 50g for 6 months?

Post by puffertt77 »

Hey Guys

Would 1 inch Mappa be ok in a 50g for 6 months?

I know there's not much known about these Puffers and was thinking of getting one (a 250g tank is nothing compared to the 1400g I'm building for Naboo, although I'd probably have the Mappa in a 300g up untill he's 1.5ft)

In 6 months I should be moving to a big apartment where the projects will finally take off

Fish keeping is my main hobby and intrest and a big part of my life evolves around it

Thanks

I would wait. You already have a giant puffer to house. Work on one giant species at a time.

Yeah I supose you're right, It's just they're hard to find and I've managed to find one!

never mind

What about a 1inch Guinefoul would that be ok for 6 months? The LFS has one of those to (and a golden Puffer but that's £200 and I don't have that right now)

I could easly get a 5ftx2ftx2ft 180usg tank in 6 months (Juwel Rio 400 £200 On Ebay), this would mean I've got a 180g SW and a 1400g freshwater tank (I may reduce this to 1000g)

NO.
Stop and think about this for a while.
You already have one large puffer that you need to rehome sooner than later. Adding another large puffer is NOT going to help the situation. So far I have not seen any updates to you moving your mbu to a tank even half the recommended size in the next year.

You're starting to come off as a "puffer hoarder" -- someone who is just getting puffers to "look cool" on an internet forum, and ignoring the true needs of the animals.

I don't see how an apartment complex will allow you to have this many tanks in an apartment, ESPECIALLY a 1000+ gallon one. You need to seriously think about where you're going to take your hobby.

I agree you should really get your Mbu sorted out before taking on another large puffer and tank.
It happens too often that someone gets a puffer with intentions to rehome, but it keeps getting pushed back until A: the fish dies or B: Has to find a new owner.

I desperately want a golden, but will never buy one unless I have the tank and time to take care of it.

Should be 6 months if all goes to plan (if he grows noticabley to big for it in the next 3 months he'll be upgraded, even if it's a stepping stone Rio 400 180g)

I admit I've got the bug and there's 3 maybe 4 types/species that I really want to own (SW Golden, Mappa, Guinefoul, Porc) at some point in my life. As for trying to look cool I gave that up in my 20's and even then I wasn't to good at it :)
Seriously though I do get where you're coming from and apreciate your concern is for the well being of the puffers

When I say an apartment it'll probably be the bottom half of a house that has been changed into 2 flats, this way I would own the garden and could extend out onto it

Point taken though I'll put things on hold untill I know I can provide the proper care for more puffers

You've been saying a few months for this mbu's tank for the past few months. Are you going to get your act together and start building it/buying the materials, or are you just going to tell your puffer "Just a few more months until I can put you into a tank that you need to have to survive". I honestly believe that your puffer is going to die before you even begin to build the tank.
I don't think that a renter will like to have that big of a tank that could break and cause massive water damage to the lower half of the house. I wouldn't count on it. I would think either buy your own house where you are fully responsible for the weight and possible water damage from the tank, or rehome the mbu.
I want a lot of puffers too, but I don't go on a forum asking a question like that, when you know what the answer is going to be. Why would you even think about keeping a puffer that can get to the size of a small cat in a 50 gallon tank during any time of it's life?

If money is an issue i would definitely look for other alternatives to a mbu. You really should look into a bigger tank soon.

Put it this way...think of you living in a closet for 6 months. You have to remember that it isn't just about size only that it is about bio-load.

I've only had him for 2 months, and now you know my situation with needing to move before I can start the project. Have you actually seen a 3inch fish in a 67g tank, he's tiny, it's not like he cannot turn around, imagine a fully grown 19inch Porc in a 120g 4ftx2ftx2ft tank! it'd hardly be able to turn in a empty 2ft wide tank having only 5 inches leway let alone with half the tank full of LR! It would also be 1 3rd as long as the 4ft tank. If I had my Mbu in a 9 inch long by 6inch wide tank that'd be the same dimensions! and before you mention the Bioload again my water's been stable/the same for a month and a half.

I never said I wasn't going to buy and I would've thought me saying I'd be able to extend would hint that I'd be buying

Again it's 1 inch long not 26inches and I was asking the pros what they thought, would you prefer I just went ahead and did it with out using this forum for what it's suppose to be used for...

"Probably" & "if all goes to plan", being the pertinent words here.
