Adding friends to GOLDEN/BRONZE puffer tank???

Post by drives2002bmw »

I have a 55 gallon tank with 2 Auriglobus silus/Auriglobus modestus in it that are both about an 1-1.5 inches long. I was wondering if adding a senegal bichir or if there are other worm like bottom/inside substrate dwellers that could be added to the tank?
What other types of fish similar to senegal bichir are there? I have seen some that actually live in the substrate and perhaps this would be a cool tank mate for these two puffers.
Any thoughts or questions about this???
Thanks!

Mine has killed every fish in his tank except a large pleco.

iwould not go with a bichir, they have longer tail fins which would be tempting to the puffers, and they tend to sit still for a while.

you could possibly look for some kuhli loaches or weather loaches. the kuhli loaches only get 4 inches long, burrow under the gravel all day and eat all the leftovers, but they mostly only come out when you turn off the lights. the weather loaches can get up to 10 inches, will burrow and eat the same as the kuhlis but are more active during the day, and because of there size you shuld probably also feed them algae wafers and shrimp pellets in addition to he leftovers they get.

another possibility is a tiretrack eel or 2. they get around 10 inches or so and really hide under the gravel and decor alot.

but from what i hear modestus are extremly good at killing everyting in the tank... so i guess its up to you, but be prepared to lose a fish or 2 or all of the extra ones you put in there, because the puffers may kill them.

out of these i would say kuhli loaches, they are lightning fast and will hve a better chance against the puffers, but they only get 4 inches. you cold probably get 6 of them.

thanks! I will look into these few species and see if my LFS has them or could order a few and try them out. I'll let you know how it goes.

So far my A.Modestus have left alone the kuhli loaches (one loach even stole a piece of shrimp from one- the Modestus are young still but that is one brave kuhli) and a whip tail catfish- can't guarantee the cat will be safe in the future (have another tank I can put him in) but the kuhlies are so good at hiding that the puffers don't even notice them (the kuhlies do come out at night).

Tiretrack eels get WAY bigger than 10 inches. My fire eel is ~13'' right now and still growing.

I would not suggest a senegal bichir. My senegal is the only fish that I have put with my A. Silus that my he has ever attacked.

Tiretracks do not get as large as fire eels.

Really? I thought they got bigger. I thought peacocks were the only ones that stayed realatively small.
