Hi guys!! My friend recently bought a fahaka from LFS and is under quarantine right now. Due to the fact that his computer is not working. So he ask me to post this for him because his question is out of my league as i never own a fahaka before. He sayshe been treating his fahaka with gel tek cure px in the tank and soak bloodworms with it during feeding. The fahaka still willing to eat actually my friend says very eager to eat but next day the belly will get sunken really quickly. He also put a little salt in the tank. He watch the fahaka poop and is all black. So i dont know what else he can do. Im pretty sure is IP. This treatment been going on for a week now. Can anyone give me advice about this. especially if you have face the same problem with your fahaka. Thanks in adavnce!!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Tell him that if the pooh is not white or stringy and slimy then it's not ip's. He can stop the treatment. He needs to feed the puffer shrimp, clams, mussels, crabs etc. Annabelle with through a skinny fase and now she's starting to fatten up. Although she did have ip's. But tell him to try more filling food as listed above.

i find that strange too because his fahaka only 2 1/2 inch long. I feed my puffers every other day and their belly never would get sunken the next day but his fahaka get sunken next day after he feeds him like it go ip's. So are you advicing to feed his fahaka everyday with shrimp,mussels,etc?

When he feeds his fahaka is his/her belly nice and round and fat or is it just filled out? I never fed Annabelle bloodworms when she was 2". It just didn't seem like it would fill her up.
I always fed her one of these:
@ 7" one whole mussel @ 2" 1/2 mussel
@ 7" one whole shrimp @ 2" 1/2 shrimp
@ 7" two whole scallops @ 2" 1 scallop
@ 7" 1/4 of a crab
What I'm saying is maybe he needs to feed something more filling for the puffer, something that will keep it full longer and not just bloodworms. Something with more meat to it. Puffer's need variety in their diet anyway.
