****! I just blew my heater!

Post by puffertt77 »

I stupidly forgot to switch my heater off when doing a 80% water change and accidentally splashed some water on the heater and it blew up!

I've had to move all my fish to my 30 litre Betta tank as it was 10pm when it happened

I'll have to get a heater first thing in the morning and tranfer all the fish back to the big tank

My dad did just that with the 600 gallon we have in our living room.
Both heaters went kapooot.

Glad your fishes are a-okay!

My family, well mostly my dad, brother and I are aquarium enthusiasts if you will.
I grew up with tanks all over my house.

My dad used to have an arowana in the 600 gallon? But he passed away a while ago.
We currently have a red belly catfish and I think what are tinfoil barbs and a reallllly big pleco.

Oh crap! Glad your fishies are ok. Is Naboo stealing your bettas bed? lol
I did a similar thing once... I was completely draining a tank, and I forgot that the heater was still plugged in... started smelling something melting.... realized my heater was completely ruined.... luckily there was no water and thus no explosion.

Thanks, yeah they're ok now, I thought Bollo my SAP was having trouble but he's doing fine now

I was sitting at the computer this morning and saw something move in the big empty tank, when I looked closer it was 2 tiny Guppy babies!

I cannot believe they survived the night in the tank with no heater!

The water was still 70f so maybe it was just warm enough for them to survive, they probably wondered what was going on as they had the whole empty tank to themselves

My Crayfish managed to get out of the baby Guppy net box I put him in to seperate him from the Puffers, the first thing I did was check how fat Naboo was, thankfully he looked pretty normal. I couldn't find the Cray in the tank so I had a hunt under my bed and round the back of my side cabnet

I finally found him amongst all my crap on the side next to my side cabnet, he was pretty dried out and let me pick him up, I held him under the water over the bubble strip and then put him back in with the baby Guppy's where he escaped from

He was a bit dazed and bubbles were coming out of his head, but he suddenly came to life and zoomed backwards round the net box

I've totally cleaned my tank from top to bottom, thought I may as well while all the fish are out of it. I cleaned all the gravel and have done a 100% water change. I kept the filter going with the old water, the tanks heating up now

I've made some nice caves for the fish to chill in and swim through, cannot wait to get them all back in there and watch them explore their new enviroment :)

If he was a lot bigger I would've been up all night looking after him in the bath making sure the water was constantly warm enough :)

I think I'll keep a spare heater and maybe get another external filter so there's always 2 of everything

I'm sure he would have been fine if the water temp dropped a few degrees. Remember, it's a pretty big volume of water to cool down.

Yeah it dropped to 70f, but when I first got it and did the same (cooked 2 300w heaters and plastic guards) the temp dropped to 50f so I just wanted to be safe

I cannot remember if I posted it here but I found 2 tiny baby Guppy's in the large tank in the morning, they looked lost in there with nothing else in there :)

This is why I always keep my heaters horizontally just above the gravel line - I never adjust the silly things anyway.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.

Yeah, I've started doing that, too. The only problem is if you don't happen to have a submersible heater.

I shattered a really nice 50 watt submersible heater in my Betta tank. I was NOT impressed.
