I've just recently gotten more puffers and thought I'd come on and tell everyone about it. You know how it is, you get something new and you want to tell people about it!
I had been anticipating getting my Baileyi for a couple of months, and this past weekend we finally went down to Derby and got him/her. The man that I bought the Baileyi from said he used to write for TPF (maybe moderate?), his name is Ian .... anyone know who I'm talking about? I don't want to divulge anymore information in consideration for his privacy. But anyway, he knew alot about puffers. He had a lovely Fahaka, really beautiful. The Baileyi I got is rather large, bigger than I thought he/she would be. But he also had a juvenile suvattii that he needed a home for, so he asked me nicely and I took it too. We had a good time talking about puffers, which ones we like best, which ones we've owned, etc.
I already had 2 juvenile suvattii that were tank-bred and are siblings. So what I did was take the new suvattii and put him/her in the new top tank, and then I added the other 2 later, so they would not be territorial towards the newer, smaller suvattii. Strangely enough the new suvattii and one of the other ones are buddies now. They lay together and there's been no aggression at all, and no nasty behaviour. In fact, my suvattii have been more active since I moved them to this new tank than I've ever seen them. So it's been interesting.
The Baileyi is in the tank below, all by himself (or herself), but seems fine. He's even taken some food, so that's a good sign. I didn't think he'd take any food yet, as I know they can sometimes go off food until they feel more comfortable.
So, I'm really happy with my new additions.
And then today we took a ride down to Nottingham and visited 2 fish stores. I bought 2 more Dwarf puffers -- I already have many of them in 2 different tanks, but I just can't resist them, they are so cute and they are the first puffer that caused me to have "Puffer Fever". Then we went to the other shop and they had a really nice variety of puffers, and ones that I don't generally see in retail shops. I ended up taking home a couple of Fang's puffers. I think they may be a male and female. I've read that they can be nasty little so-and-so's, but so far they seem okay, although I know it's early days yet. But I've tried to make the tank so that they can have their territories and hopefully not find a reason to fight. Before I put them in the tank I removed all the specialty snails that were in there. I didn't want them eaten, and I didn't want to have to put my hand in that tank to pull the snails out after the Fang's were in there. I've heard from other people that they will indeed bite you if you put your hand in the tank, unlike all my other puffers who run away from me. I have to say they are a very attractive puffer. I was going to buy the Common puffer or Emerald puffer (T. cutcutia), but when I got a good look at them, they reminded me too much of my South American puffers, so I decided against it. Not that there's anything wrong with my SAP's, but I wanted something different.
I have one more addition coming this weekend -- a Palembang puffer or Humpback. I have a tank already ear-marked for him and am eager to get him. Once I have the Palembang I will have to avert my eyes when I go into fish shops because I won't have any more tanks available.
I'm very happy with all my puffers, they keep me busy that's for sure. I will try to get some pictures up as soon as I can.
