Freshwater puffer

my wife and I have seen puffers at the store and want to get some. i have been researching and found out that they seem to start out in freshwater but are actually brackish water fish. the fresh water shortens their lives, and a s the mature they need brackish water. my question is, is there any totally freshwater puffer, one that will not be harmed by staying in freshwater his entire life

There are quite a few, congos, hairy puffers, dwarf puffers, bronze and gold puffers.....

Not all of us are like that. When someone starts asking about buying a GSP - or any other puffer - at our store, I go to great lengths to make sure they know what they're getting into. And I mean they get the whole speech: water quality, tank size, salt vs fresh water, growing teeth, food requirements, aggressiveness, and on and on. By the time they have answered all my questions, and I have answered theirs, most people realize that they are not equipped to care for or make a commitment to what they thought was just a cute little fish, and they leave with a few tetras instead. I of course would love to make a sale, but there's no way I'm letting someone get a puffer if they can't give it what it deserves.
