Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

**Need of help! Puffer isn't eating, may have eggs in tank..

Post by i_heart_puffers »

Hello everyone! I am in need of your help. My main puffer Puffy which I've had for a year or so has not been eating. About 5 days ago I switched Puffy from a 7 gallon Aquavista (a tank mounted on the wall, looks like a pictureframe) to a 3 gallon eclipse. I switched Puffy because the Aquavista is very hard to keep clean due to its depth. Puffy was the only one in that tank. So I went out and bought the 3 gallon eclipse tank hoping that I can keep that water nice and clean. The day I added the Puffy to the eclipse, I also added another puffer so he would have a buddy. They get along fine no nipping or hassaling eachother. The new puffer eats bloodworms and snails just fine. Puffy was fine the first couple days in new tank and now for the past 3 days he hasn't eaten anything. He looks plump as always, no signs of external damage or losing weight. I checked water levels and temperature, everything is fine. The fish store told me he may be just taking time to adjust to the new tank. I have no idea. I found patches of egg like stuff on the side wall of the tank (about 3 patches of egg like stuff around tank.) Hopefully you guys can at least help me with the egg like stuff. You can't see in the pic but in my eyes it looks like clear little bubbles with a white dot inside each bubble. If those are eggs what do I do? I tried my best in taking nice pics. I also listed this posting on dwarfpuffer.com haven't seen any replies yet. Thanks : )

Even if Puffy is a dwarf puffer (I'm praying he is), 3g is only large enough for a singleton DP.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Either those are snail eggs or puffy and the new friend got it on. :D Dwarf puffers will breed in captavity. You may have to get a much larger tank. :D I wouldn't worry about puffy not eating, he/she can go a while with no food. If that is puffer eggs they should hatch soon and puffy will start to eat again. :D

Fyi: As stated above you really need 3-5 gallons per dwarf puffer. The 7 gallon you had him in would have been better for the two than the 3 gallon you moved them too. 8)

I see thanks a lot. I will just upgrade the tank. That 7 gallon is too much of a hassle. If they were puffer eggs, how long do they take to hatch?? or if it were snail eggs how long does that take??? When I took a good close look yesterday I saw more patches of eggs. Im worried its going to be snails galoreeee.

Don't worry about the snail eggs - newly hatched snails are a puffer buffet. If they were puffer eggs, they wouldn't be in jelly, DP eggs pop out and roll around in the substrate.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.
