Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Little Billy has a boo boo.
I just got a really cute little puffer today, his name is Billy, and he has a cut on his belly. It isn't bleeding, it just looks like the skin is missing. The manager of the pet store said he was okay but I'm not sure. He's swimming fine but he isn't eating. Is he okay?

Please list the answers to the questions above.
What type of puffer?
What tank size?
Melafix should work.

Oh yea.
What are you feeding him?
Puffers sometime take a lil while for them to get used to the tank

Re: Little Billy has a boo boo.
1. I haven't tested for ammonia and stuff but i put nutralizer in and there should be none. The salinity is 1.025 on my hydrometer.
2. 20 gallon tank, with a silver tipped shark (about 3 inches) and a puffer (not sure what kind) he's about 2 inches.
3.flakes and sometimes prawns, i added instant ocean yesterday and stress coat and stress zyme to the water
4.i just got the tank yesterday and it had no fish in it for 24 hours and just had the filter and air running. I put my shark in after that and bought the puffer today.
5.since yesterday. i just had the water sit with nothing in it for a while and added the stuff i said earlier.
and i fed him some flakes and a few shrimp.

Sounds like a green spotted puffer.Pictures will be good.
They need 30 gallons each. they are brackish which they later go into full saltwater tanks.best kept alone. rlly cool fish though.hard to take care of some times.

Re: Little Billy has a boo boo.
Your tank is not cycled, and puffers can only be introduced to a fully cycled tank. Bacteria has to build up so that the waste products the fish produce that become poisonous to the fish can be converted to harmless substances, and this takes lots of time. If you're at 1.025, go buy some Bio-Spira immediately, which will add the bacteria you need and your tank will cycle in a week more or less instead of 1 month and a half. This is a marine puffer you bought, right?

Re: Little Billy has a boo boo.
Looks like a porcopine puffer, you need a way bigger tank. At least six times bigger, and fully cycled.
Grant me the serenity to accept that I can't take every puffer home;

And the wisdom to do every thing I can for the ones that I have.

Oh my. That's a porcupine puffer and, I hate to say, will not survive long in that tank cycled or not. Porcs require at least 120 gallons to survive and even lager to thrive. Here's their link:

Re: Little Billy has a boo boo.
The silver tip is a shoaling fish, needing at least 70+ gallons reaching 12+ inches in a cycled tank.
