SAP'S with other fish

Post by craigsmith88 »

I have a 300 litre tank so 80 gallons it will be a planted tank, going to have a shoal of SAP's about 6 - 8 i want to keep other fish with them; Cardinal Tetras, Ottos, a pair of Blue Rams, a Pair of Kribinses are these ok or is there any problems with the stocking does anyone have any suggestions.

Cheers

I think you would be fine. The only fish I'd be really worried about would be the Kribs and Rams at breeding time, but I've kept SAP's with breeding kribs in the past and they were fine. An 80 gallon would give the SAP's plenty of room to get out of their way and stay out of it.

The only big worry about keeping a large group of SAP's in a bigger tank is they need pretty regular tooth trimmings, and trying to catch a SAP is pretty tough since they are so fast and often jumpy. Now, try to catch 6-8 of them in a big tank, every few months... not a fun job!

They'd be happy little campers in a big group like that!
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

AAAAHHHHH!!! this question is perfect! :D i've been wondering if i could put SAPs with German Blue Rams!
i have a 20 gallon tank and i would like, if possible, to put 4 SAPs with a pair of German Blue Rams. is that possible? or is the tank just too small? i heard of someone doing this exact same mix in a 20 gallon on another forum but is it safe for either species?

SAPs need more space than that. I think it's 15g each, so 60g, plus more for the rams.

You could have a figure 8 or dwarf puffers. Maybe a ceylon? But don't take my word for it on the last one - check the PufferPedia.

Oh, are the blure rams already in there? No, that wouldn't work. Most puffers are best off in species tanks.

SAP's with other fish is not a good idea at all.
about 3 months ago, i bought 3 saps. i also figured that i could get away with putting some cardinal tetras in the tank. 60 seconds after i put 6 tetras in the tank, 2 were missing tails and could not remain upright because of it, 2 were swimming for their lives, and all that was left of the other 2 were heads. and the puffers were less than an inch long. they were not even a month old back then. do not do this. ever.
the only fish that my sap's seem to be uninterested in is my pleco. he is about 7-8 inches, and he is huge compared to them. his mouth is bigger than their bodies. you can try putting something small in there with them, but be prepared to fish dead heads out of the water.
sorry.

Well, Captain Morgan, unless you get a bigger tank, you'll have to pick between puffers and blue rams.
