What the necessaryspecific gravity for a brackish tank?

I just cycle my brackish tank a week ago and I do not know what the necessary SG for the tank. I search online and some article said it 1.002 or a little higher. Is it correct? BTW I will get a dwarf puffer, in the store it label ninja puffer but I cannot find any information of ninja puffer on the internet.

dwarf puffers are freshwater and don't do well in brackish (i have seen then kept in brackish though, but they were gone within a week either to death or being sold). as far as a specific SG though it depends on the puffer. F8s like low to mid brackish (1.010 to 1.015) while GSPs like high brackish ti full marine (1.018 to 1.024). so i would just research the puffer. but if its truly a dwarf puffer its a freshwater fish. the pufferpedia on this site is great for IDing puffer. look under the learn tab and then search the freshwater section first to see if its a dwarf puffer, if its not there then search under the brackish puffers. it lists the SG for each puffer under it's own profile in the pufferpedia.

Not really sure, but I think it goes something like this: 1.002-1.008, low-end brackish. 1.009-1.014, mid-range brackish. 1.015-1.020, high-end brackish. Something like that.

F8s do best in low-end SG of 1.005. Please be sure to correctly ID the puffer you are getting for proper conditions. How are you cycling your tank?

I talked to one of the employee at the pet store last week and she told me she had two of them and she kept them in a low SG brackish water tank. She told me to cycle the tank for two weeks with mollies or guppies but I have two platys and a dozen fry of platys. She said use the fry to cycle the tank and I did, it had been one week already, btw I add two tablespoon in my 10g tank with the fry and they seem doing ok. Thanks in advance.

Brackish is anywhere from greater than 1.000 to less than 1.022, more or less.

Not if you think that is the way to cycle a tank, you don't. Please read the article on Fishles Cycling in our library.

Wow yeah I missed the cycling part, got focused on the fish identification. He either needs to let it cycle another month or so and make sure it's completely cycled, or get some Tetra SafeStart ASAP.

I read the article three times and I try to do what it said. Right now I try to speed up the cycle process by getting some of the gravel from the platys to the cycle tank.

Are you still cycling with fish? You'll need the same mount of bioload neecessary to support a puffer if you insist on cycling that way.

Yes I still have platy fry in the tank to cycle. I'm going to take the bio grid from the other tank and give to the cycle tank to speed up the cycle, hope this will work.
