"Cannister filters on saltwater tanks are nitrate factories"
So, is it a really bad idea to put a cannister filter on a saltwater tank? Can I get away with it by changing the media or anything? I don't understand how its any different than a prefilter on a sump or powerhead, or even live rock with current going through it.. so to me, that statement screams "myth".
Reason I'm asking.. Right now on Paris's tank I have a powerhead going with a prefilter, and an AC500 (hang on back power filter, only media is the sponge). When I set up her tank, I was planning on using the overflow/sump and a skimmer, not any filter to hang on it. The AC500 barely fits between the tank and the wall, but I'm noticing moisture and salt creep are starting to damage the wall a bit (paint/plaster cracking and peeling). So I need to get the HOB filter off there (we rent, and I do have to admit the landlord will probably never even notice this additional damage, the walls in here are all old and cracked.. gives it character, right? LOL But I don't want it to start growing mold or anything (had that issue with a brackish tank I ran with the filter too close to the wall).
So.. the issue with the sump is one that I've been dragging my feet on dealing with... I unhooked it after an unfortunate backsiphoning situation that resulted in about 9 gallons of water in our carpet and the downstairs neighbor's apartment
I can't take the sump out and empty it, because its inside the stand. So it sits, and ocassionally I add more water. I *could* fill it up, adjust the salinity and fishless cycle, but with the various "compartments" I doubt I could get good enough water circulation to cycle it properly. Not to mention there's probably a whole lot of dead "nasties" in there, between pods, chaeto and just gunk in general. Thank god the thing hasn't started to smell bad!
So er yeah, back to the subject, I want to take off the AC500 and hook up the XP3 canister instead. Bad idea?
I'm still trying to figure out a way to use my skimmer on the main tank, its not made to fit over the big lip of a 75. I was going to use it on the sump, but well, that didn't happen...
Buying a new skimmer would be the easy answer
