Has anyone tried sticking 2 6 ft tanks together before?

Hello All

I'm thinking of buying 2 cheap tanks off ebay and glueing them end to end with silicon glue.

There's 2 ways I was going to try it, either:-

1) Taking the end piece of glass out on each tank and then putting them end to end and then glueing 3 1ft pieces of glass overlapping both sides and the bottom of the tank.

(Red square is 1 sheet of glass stuck to inside, also another piece would be stuck to opposite side of tank and 1 final piece stuck to bottom of tank)

Or

2) Cutting a square out of 1 end of each of the tanks and leaving about 4 inches all the way round and then glueing each end of each tank together.

(Think I might have a nightmare trying to cut the glass)

I would fix the tanks together where they will live for the rest of the time I owned them

Has anyone tried this before?

Do you think either of these theories would work and which one do you favour?

2nd option is a much better place to start because it's stronger, but not sure if the idea would work or not because the water pressure might bow and break the glass...

Yeah... Any tank over 50 gallons of water has me freaked out about busting glass. Unless you've got this in a basement, I wouldn't really trust it. You'd be much better off buying some large pieces of acrylic and just building your own.

Or making a plywood tank, cheapest alternative for making a monster tank.

I definitely think it would break, and that seam right in the middle from where the 2 pieces of glass meet would annoy me lol.

Find a big leaking tank and reseal it, much easier.

I saw a tank on ebay months ago and it was 3 metres w x 1.5 metres d x 2 metres h, the guy paid £8000 for it new and it sold for £250!

Aparently he had trouble selling it because every time someone won it on ebay they came round and saw the size of it in person and didn't want it.

Would've been hard to move, must've been so heavy.

I wasn't in the country at the time and would've loved to have bought it

just do what some guy on monsterfishkeepers.com did. build a small room out of glass in my basement and just will the rest of the basement outside of the glass up. lol

Option one will definately burst. The glass on a 6 foot tank just isn't strong enough, even with reinforced frames, to handle the pressure of that much water. The length would cause major bowing, which even with massive reinforcement near the seams, would destroy the thinner glass down the line. Cutting a hole COULD work - but it would have to be near the top of the tank where the pressure is least. I drilled a 1.75" hole in a 72 bowfront, and it was quite a pain.
