It is an f 8. DP's are much smaller, and the markings are different

Oh. Would it do okay in a freshwater environment? It is eating a looking pretty good so far...I have had it for about a week

they do best in low brackish

It needs low brackish water using ocean/sea salt, NOT aquarium salt. Salt will help kill the ich.

It's a F8 It does best in brackish water. Brackish water is easy to maintain. The only difference is that it has a little bit of salt in it that you could get at your local fish store. Overall, it could survive in freshwater, but it would be alot healthier in brackish. Also make sure that your water is cycled. (No ammonia, no nitrites, and a very little bit of nitrates)

I currently have it in a 5 gallon tank for now since i cannot have it in the same tank as my DPs. Would it be okay in a 5 gallon for now? It is only about 1 inch.

It needs to be in 15 gallons minimum. Keeping it in a 5 gallon can cause it to stunt it's growth and shorten it's lifespan.

Honestly, if the F8 is only 1 inch long, it'll be fine in a 5 gallon until you can locate a 15-20 gallon. It's also fine in freshwater for the time being, to make things easier (they're usually born in freshwater anyways, if I'm not mistaken). Just hunt around for a used 15-20 gallon (shouldn't be too expensive) and try to get it within the next 3 months. Then start cycling it as a low-end brackish tank (you'll have to do some reading on it).
