Annabelle IP's (From Tapeworms to Camallanus worms)

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Ugh! That was not a pretty sight. After searching a little, I found these two threads at plecofanatics:
http://www.plecofanatics.com/forum/show ... hp?t=15580
http://www.plecofanatics.com/forum/show ... t=red+worm

A fish med dealer suggest these meds as a cure "Treat with: Paracide-D in the food and De-Los in the water." I have no idea whether they are available except from a vet in the US. They are certainly not available around here.

Guy's and Gal's, this does not sound good for my baby! :( I'm soooo upset! I just start crying when I read it. :( I'm going to the Vet's office to see if any of this is available as soon as they open. I don't know what else to do. I sent a pm to Nick also, with a copy of this to see what he thinks. I promised I would keep you updated so I also posted it here. I'll let you know if I can get the meds from the vet.

This is the message he sent me:
Camallanus worms are not very easy to destroy. I've gathered several information and reference files and praziquantel and metronidazole don't prove lethal for camallanus. The only meds that will truly destroy the worms are levamisole hydrochloride, fenbendazole, flubenol or flubendazole. The trouble with levamisole is it is old fashioned (though nevertheless effective) so not many people hear about this med's existence. Try the vets if they have it. It is used for livestocks but is effective with fish as well. I tried it before and the fish won't eat for a few days. Dose by 2mg per liter. You have to anticipate their refusal to eat due to te side effects by levamisole. Second treatment can be done 3 days later but do a large water change first. Third treatment is done in a week. The last one should be on another week. That med is powerful and can kill plenty of internal parasites though it is recorded not to kill planaria and some other pests (other than internal parasites).

If your fish refuses to eat medicated foods, put Kent's liquid garlic on it. Three drops will do it. Don't add more as the scent is overpowering and can confuse the fish.

I found the aquatic vet from Austin Tx. that tried to help me save Selena. I sent him an email about Annabelle. He was really good at getting back to me when Selena was sick. I hope to hear from him today. I'll let you know what happens.

Fishlady, When Selena was ill, I tried to find an Aquatic Vet in the houston area and had no luck. If you have any luck finding one please let me know. I'll pm you my cell number so that you can call me if you do.

Thanks

levamisole hydrochloride is used as a cattle, pig and sheep de-wormer. You may want to try feed and livestock stores to try to find a form of it. A lot of the cattle ones are water soluble and possibly safe for fish. You just need to check it's inactive ingredients. If Texas regulates the stuff I can see if I can find it here and overnight it. I have a good friend that is a Vet and he may be able to come up with it too.

I'm sorry this is happening, this really stinks.

Fishlady found me a vet that's not too far away. I just got off the phone with the office. The doctor's not in today but will be back tomorrow. I emailed all the pictures of Annabelle, her diary that I have been keeping on her, the information I found online, and the response I received from the guy that wrote the article. She's going to give it to the vet in the morning for her to look it over and give me a call.

The vet's office just called me. They got my emails and just wanted to let me know. I have to say that I am a basket case right now! :( I'll update with any news tomorrow.

COME ON, EDMLFC1 AND ANNABELLE! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

I did find this online:
http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html ... 6580,16572

I think it's the medication that he suggested. After reading a few of the forums I finally found the name it actually goes under in the states (Levasole). I'm waiting to hear from the vet before I order anything.

Btw: Thanks Dadof4 for sending me that article it helped me find more information on her condition.
