Annabelle IP's (From Tapeworms to Camallanus worms)

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Anyway she's begging for food, swimming, blowing sand, goes into hunting mode when she see's one of the ghost shrimp that's now living in her tank. Apparently she still can't catch them. When I try to feed her an earthworm she swims away like the worm is going to eat her. Other than that she's acting pretty normal and back to her old self. The only thing she's not doing (that she did before this all started)
she's not playing give mommy a heart attack when I bury myself in the sand and she can't find me. :D

I put the gel-tek on her food again this morning then fed it to her. She ate it up. No problem. It says feed twice a day with gel-tek so tonight I'll feed her another small portion. She was mad at me earlier this morning, she wanted more food but I didn't give in. I just told her she would have to wait until I get home. 8)

well, that's good that she's acting normal for you....then i guess she just had to give out a big ugly poo....tell me who hasn't had to do that every now and then....sheeesh....look at all she's been thru....she's probably more relaxed than she has been in weeks.... :D

Yes it's offical, Annabelle still has some worm. There's about 3 inches coming out of her right now. I was trying to check her while she was under the long. I tried to move her out, she spun around and bit my pinky finger! This is the first time she has ever bit me. Needless to say I was shocked! She picked at her food this morning so my guess is that the worm is dying and it's messing with her tummy again. I'll be treating her with the meds again tonight. She picked enough at her food that I believe she got enough meds this morning so tonight I'll treat her again and see how it goes.

Came home for lunch (not really), just wanted to check on Annabelle. Anyway she's swimming and hunting so maybe tonight she will eat better. Looks like she's passed some of the worm. I added epsom salt to her tank this morning to help her out a bit. Here are the pictures from earilier:

This set of worms dosen't look like the first tapeworm. At least not to me. I guess it could be the same but it looks different this time. Maybe it's just a smaller version of the tapeworm. :(

Ugh. Poor Annabelle!
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Today is day 5 of treating with ultra cure, yesterday morning and last night she was a bit lethagic. Yesterday morning she barley ate her food. More like picked at it. Last night she ate well but was laying on a log all night. This morning she's more energenic and ate all her medicated food and was looking for more. Tonight will be her last treatement. Last night I didn't see any signs of worm, this morning she had about 3 inches of worm coming from her anus. After tonights feeding I'll give her a week to recover and treat her again.

Could IPs become resistant to meds?

I'm sure it's possible, like with other meds if you don't treat the full treatment it may become resistant. I'm not 100% sure about it.
