New Additions to Irrubesco Tank

Post by pufferpuggirl »

Last weekend we went down to Lincoln, to the Maidenhead Aquatics, and I got 2 Red-Eye puffers. I had never had them before, but I'd been reading about them and I've been wanting them for quite a while.
At first I was put off because I was told they were C. lorteti, and I had read that the lorteti can be very nasty towards their own kind, and I had been wanting to get some males and females. So the entire time we were driving down to Lincoln (we live near Worksop), I was fretting about having puffers that want to kill each other. I've been very lucky with all my puffers, they don't hurt each other and with the exception of my Suvattii, my puffers don't hurt any other fish either.

I was pleasantly surprised when we got to Maidenhead and the puffers they are selling as C. lorteti are actually C. irrubesco!! I was overjoyed and quickly bought 2, which turned out to be males. I was so happy with having gotten the puffers I've been wanting that we went down to Lincoln earlier today and I bought 4 more, all females. So now I've got 2 males and 4 females, and they are loving the tank I have them in. It's heavily planted and very attractive, I don't mind saying, and there's lots of places for them to hide. I do have 1 Gibbiceps in there with them, but he stays to himself and so far, they've not bothered him at all. There's also an Upside-Down catfish in there, I have no idea where it is and it stays hidden most of the time so hopefully it won't be bothered by the new Red-Eyes that have invaded the tank.
I could not be happier because I've been wanting these Red-Eyes just about since I first read about them. Today has been a very happy day for me, and I could not be happier because my tank full of Dwarf & SAP's seems to have gotten over the white spot outbreak that has been plaguing me all week, I lost 3 but it could have been worse.
So now I have 9 C. travancoricus (Dwarf puffers), 2 C. asellus (SAP's), 1 T. biocellatus (Figure Eight), 2 M. Suvattii (Arrowhead) , and 6 Red-Eye Puffers (C. irrubesco) - of course these are not all in the same tank ..... I have several tanks. :D

Life is good when you have puffers in your life!!

I bet that tank is fascinating to watch now! How big is it? Be sure to keep a close eye on the parameters & do WC accordingly, as adding 6 puffers to any tank can create quite a bioload.

Excellent Ray, you've got to let me know how that goes, I've never done a marine tank before, the closest I've ever gotten is my brackish tank. Hey .... did you have any thoughts on the DP question I asked you? Let me know if you are interested.

Yeah, the tank I put the Red-Eyes in was not a newly cycled tank, it did have other fish in it that were taken out to make room for my irrubesco's. And I have a regular schedule for water changes that I keep to, but I check conditions regularly anyway. After my recent close call with nearly losing my other puffers, I am going to make sure my new Red-Eye tank is how it should be. I even keep extra filter sponges in my big tank's filter box, so I can change them out with the filter in the Red-Eye tank.

I am a happy woman! :D

The amount of bacteria in a cycled tank is only enough to support the life that is in there at present. What many folks don't understand is adding any amount of fish to an "established" tank is adding extra bioload that the bacteria needs time to catch up with, unless the fish that were in there before are removed & replaced with the same bioload.

Yeah, I understand what you are saying, but I did, in fact, take out 6 fish, which I have replaced with my 6 irrubesco puffers (2 last week, and 4 yesterday). I did a little move around to make room for the puffers.

I also test my water to make sure that things are okay, even if the tank is clear I still check it. I do weekly water changes to all my tanks, even if the readings are good, and if one needs a water change before it's allotted day, I do a water change immediately. I love all my fish, but my puffers are my favourites. :D
