I picked up two lyretail mollies (I know, long tails probably not a good idea...but they were too cute) - one golden colored and one dalmation. The golden one is hanging out with my puffer.

Lol, I think he found a friend. Just make sure he doesn't try to mate with the puff if they are males... I have wittness weird things with male livebearers...

Well, my puffer bit at the gold molly twice when I was feeding the mollies some flakes...but once he figured out they were not eating something he would like he went on about his merry way.
I have a good LFS who'll take them back if things look dicey, and only time will tell. They are munching away on algae, though. At this rate, it should be gone in about a day.
Oh, they are remarkably pretty fish. The dalmation molly has turquoise blue in it's dorsal fin which is just stunning. I never was much of a molly or livebearer person - apart from Variatus platy's which I seem to have an affinity for - but that may change.

combatting algae / potential knight goby and F8 tankmates
I wanted to resurrect this thread...I know I'm new to the site, but am not new to fishkeeping, and just wanted to shed some light and ask some questions...
First off, from all the research I've done, Florida flag fish do well in low brackish conditions - up to 1.005. I, too, was wondering if anyone had success in keeping any w/ one or two F8s? I've got a horrendous algae problem - neither mollies nor gobies will touch it. I use only RO/DI water and run PolyFilter to help combat phosphates, have been trying to add as many live plants as possible to use up excess nutrients (so far, java fern is doing OK, java moss hasn't taken root or grown at all, bacopa carolinina simply disintegrated in my 1.005 SG, and I've got a couple of tiger lotus...planting bracking is soooo hard!)
So guess I thought I'd re-pose the question re: flag fish and F8s. Also, wondering what other plants anyone's had success w/ in 1.005 SG?

Wow this is old but I will say something anyway... I had two flag fish with my two GSPs, well all of a sudden one of the flag fish mysteriously disappeared. Then the other one grew to be pretty big and I liked him in there because he cleaned the tank, etc. However, recently he has been chasing my puffers NON stop! It has been driving me crazy. One of my puffers doesn't seem to mind it much, but the other one gets a black belly and hides. So after a couple days of trying to cope with it, I bit the bullet and took him out. He is now in my small 6 gallon tank alone...and I'm wondering whether to bring him back to the LFS or put him in my freshwater tank. I really don't know if he would be okay in freshwater either!
So... if it were me, I wouldn't get the Flag Fish for the tank..no clue what changed in him, but my puffs are happy he is out of the tank!

When they mature, they can get really nasty - like most brackish fish, really. Even BB gobies can get nasty with each other if they don't have enough tank footprint.

Yea, I took the flag fish out and he is in a smaller tank, and my kitten always tries to get him through the glass. I'm thinking of bringing him back to the LFS. BB gobies remind me of mob men, they just have expression on their face to me. I can hear them saying "forgetaaa bout it!"

I've got mollies and bumblebee gobies in a 44g with my F8 at 1.005-1.006. Mostly, they all ignore each other. I also have plenty of cover for them. The mollies actually did a great job of cleaning up the algae at first, but since I have to feed mysis, bloodworms, brine shrimp with spirulina, chopped up shrimp, etc for the F8 and bbgs, the mollies tend to gobble those up rather than eating the algae. Although, I also have a ton of fry that are constantly picking at it too. I moved my male out to a FW community because I just couldn't deal with all those fry. I never saw the mollies or the F8 going for the fry, but the bbgs had a field day with fry.
Mollies actually are brackish fish, so they are perfect for F8 tanks as long as there is enough room. I think I'd have trouble if I had them in a smaller tank. Well, I did have one preggo molly that claimed one of the caves for a few days, and she'd chase everybody off until she decided she didn't like it anymore.
