Porcupine Puffer is NOT eating

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

I need some advice on how to help my porcupine puffer start eating ... Unfortunately she HAS been on an ALL Krill diet, fresh, frozen and freeze dried.. Ms. Puff loved it.. but not it seems that she has lock jaw or her beak and teeth fused?? She is hungry and comes up to the top of the tank to eat when I talk to her, but she also then tries to slurp in the krill and it does not make it into her mouth.. I even got her 2 fiddler crabs and she wants no part of it.. How can I help her, she is also very timid and will not let me grab her to tube feed her.. I don't want her to have a slow starving death is there anything I can do to make her eat and get back to her lazy but happy floating self? Some one please help me.

Thanks so so much for any advice that can be given.

Ms. Puff's mom, Melissa :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Sorry to say, there isn't a whole lot yoiu can do but force-feed. Go to Marine Depot & look for the fish disease forums by Puffer Queen, Kelly Jedlicki. She has an article on this in there. I believe she needs the deceasced bodies refrigerated, not frozen, for reserch. Sorry to be so cold about it but it's not good... :(

Check marinedepot. I saw a post on there a few days ago. If I remember right he was force feeding a porcupine and adding vit.b12 to the food. I read something about forcing the jaw open a little each day. I'll try to find the post and link it here for you.

Having trouble. Server unavailable. :( Go to forum.marinedepot.com and do a search on porcupine b12. I can't remember the whole story but it might be worth a shot.

This is what I did. I put shrimp, clam and mussel in a mini chopper. I added garlic extreme and vitamins then pureed it. I got a 5ml syringe with no needle and put the food in it. I used a toothpick to get as much air out as possible. If you can get the tip of the syringe into her mouth, gently push the food in. She acts like she wants to eat so you shouldn't have a problem with her swallowing it. I always scooped my puffer out of the tank with a plastic tub. After feeding release her back into the tank. If she dosen't eat it, you will need to use finquel to knock her out, attach a tube to the syringe and gently push it down her throat just past the gills. Keep your hand on her belly so that you can feel how much your feeding.

You can get vit b12 at any vitamin store and possibly walmart.

I thought PQ suggests certain B vitamins to add to the food mix? Selcon is an important one to add also.

Found this statement from pufferqueen on page 2.
Do try the B12, ghost shrimp. Might consider tube feeding if the puffer does not start eating again. There has been one reported successful tube feeding of a lionfish that was reported to have lockjaw.
Hopefully if it worked for the lionfish it will work for your puffer. Keep us posted and lots of luck to you.

Found it: Vitamin b12 quote from pufferqueen page 2
You can buy them at any health food story, grocery store or Target, Walmart, KMart, etc.

I would recommend giving it via bath instead of adding it to the entire tank - more concentrated delivery plus the stability in saltwater tank is limited.

I would probably add 500 -- 1000mcg in a couple gallons and well aerate. I would bath for an hour.

Best of luck. Keep us updated.
