Just don't eat the skin - they are saxitoxin carriers. I believe it is most common in the skim of the FW puffers w/that form of the toxin, and I believe that the article I cited earlier specified the Northern had saxitoxin as well. I don't remember if they localized it anatomically.

I worked for the East Hampton Town Natural Resources Department (and still work for East Hampton Town), and we released the Northern Puffers. We also released 600,000 Winter Flounder in 2004/2005. It's kind of funny, I was searching your forums for info on the Northern Puffer, as I am starting a local fish species marine tank in my home and have a Northern Puffer already. What a coincidence to stumble upon something that linked to a story about my department! Anyways, those puffers and flounder did not do as well as we hoped, thanks to the huge Double-crested Cormorant population, and the DEC is no longer allowing us to grow and release them. We actually just had a meeting with the DEC yesterday on the issue, and they said that no matter how popular the idea is, they are not allowing us to do it.
