Suggestions of Puffers in East Midlands

Hi,

Does anyone have a suggestion for a (preferable freshwater) Puffer that is bigger than 3-inches and semi-active? I live in the East Midlands area so if anyone knows of any LFS that has some different Puffers, I would appreciate the help.


Well I was thinking about getting an Arrowhead puffer for my birthday, which is soon approaching. I currently have 2 tanks devoted to Puffers, one freshwater and one brackish. I have 7 Dwarf Puffers and 3 South American Puffers in the freshwater, and I have 1 Green Spotted Puffer and 1 Figure 8 Puffer in the brackish tank. But I have another freshwater tank, a smaller one, that has about 5 Tetras in it, just to keep things going and I want to get a different Puffer for that tank. Like I said, I was thinking about getting an Arrowhead but another member on here has given me some insight into what they are like, and now I'm not so sure that's the Puffer for me.

I like how the other Puffers I have are active and how they move about, and the way they inspect everything -- and I'd like to get a different Puffer, possibly one that's a little bigger than the ones I have, anything over 2-3 inches would be good. I would prefer to stick with freshwater Puffers. I don't mind if the Puffer has to be on it's own, I was prepared for that anyway if I had gotten the Arrowhead. I just thought it might be nice to get something a little bigger, but not too big. There's several MBU's in my area, but they are too expensive, I'm not that devoted yet. I want to make sure I can keep them living for a long time before I start paying £75-£100 for a fish.

Well your right there are a few MBUs usually around £60-70.

how big is your tank?

to be honest in the midlands youll be pushed to find anything your after under £50 some places in the west midlands will order in Congos / Suvatti.

If your interested i think i have a eemail address of someone selling a breeding pair of suvatti for £40-50. They clutch about twice a year. Ive been to Shirley Aquatics and 2 branches of maidenhead and saw no FW puffers atall. I woud suggest a Abei if you want a active puffer that wont burry themselves.

all depends on tank size = budget i guess?

I know where I can get two Suvatti for less than £30, and I have been thinking about getting one, but I know they aren't too active either, and that's the only thing that's put me off.

MBU is too big, even if it wasn't so expensive I don't think I'd want one, but they are nice to look at and I'm sure they are very cool.

I guess I will just have to go for what's in my budget. I don't want anything much bigger than 6-8 inches.

Why you looking for Suvatti's?

The place I know where to get them from keeps trying to get me to buy one. The lady that works there successfully bred two and they have 13 juveniles from that breeding, plus the father (the mother died not too long ago). I want a bigger FW Puffer, but wanted something a little more active than the Arrowhead, but my birthday is Friday, so I guess I'm getting a Suvatti after all.

Why you looking for Suvatti's?

I'm looking for a lurker for a 55 gal that I'm setting up in my bedroom, a nice quiet place for a nice subdued tank. That and they caught my eye when I was looking through the Pufferpedia. I want either a Congo or an Arrowhead, Arrowhead preferably. They just have this look about them I like.

I will probably be getting my Arrowhead on Friday morning, so I will let you know how that goes, if you want.

What are your Dragon Gobies like? I have 2 Mudskippers, one of them is very big. As you probably know, Mudskippers are in the Goby family. I think they are pretty cool, probably the most exotic animal/fish I've ever owned. Definitely got personality that's for sure!

Ive been to 2 maidenheads, both had hundreds of puffers, esp. guildford....

Well I am still interested in freshwater Puffers, but I got 2 Suvattii for my birthday. I have a new tank that I am looking for a different species of freshwater puffer for. I'd love to have any of the redeyed species, or a Golden or Congo.
Can you tell me which Maidenheads you were at? I think there's two that aren't too far from me that have Puffers, Lincoln and Beverley in Yorkshire, but I am going to phone them tomorrow to find out for certain. Of course my local Maidenhead told me they could order in any fish that any of their other locations have, as they all order from the same supplier.

hi viscum have some figure 8 puffers in, an they said there getting some other kinds in.

I bought my last weather loach at Viscum. Did you go to the one in Doncaster?

no i went to the one at barnbrough, im not very impressed with the one at finneley doncaster.
