Possible parasites on fins....

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!
Forum rules
Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Possible parasites on fins....

Post by SpottedPuffergirl »

I noticed today that my GSP has one white spot on his dorsal fin, and two white spots on one of his pectoral fins. These spots don't look like Ich, and they're bigger than the typical Ich white spot that would cover the whole fish. He/she only has these three spots on his/her two fins. When I first bought him, I noticed he had the two on his pectoral fin, but they quickly went away and I didn't worry about it. Now, 3 weeks later the two spots came back, along with the one on his dorsal fin. What kind of parasite could this be? Like I said, the white spots are bigger than an Ich, and seem to stick out more than an Ich would. He/she is in marine water. Everything else in the aquarium is fine ( 0 nitrAte 0 nitrIte 0 ammonia PH=8). Maybe hook worm? The three spots aren't bothering him and he's not flashing or darting around the tank. Anyone know?

Okay here is the best picture I could get. I was in a hurry and Buttons just doesn't stay still. You can make out the size of the white dot at least.

Annabelle had something like that on her fin. It went away by itself.
Does it look something like this:

Yeah that's it. I did notice they seem to appear and disappear pretty fast. What is it?

Well, its definately not ich, unless that puffer is smaller than a pencil eraser ;)

Its probably some sort of cyst... I suppose there's a chance its some sort of parasite but I've never seen anything like that when researching them before.

When I originally posted the picture I was also told it was a cyst that would go away on it's on. Just like Myaj said. Nothing to worry about. It probally took about 5 days for it to completely disappear. I noticed that my stars puffer gets them also. I don't know what causes it.

She is a very calm fahaka puffer for some reason. I kept her head under water while taking the picture. :D And I tried to go as fast as I could, then I let her go. I told her it was to help other puffers and she was ok with that. :D

probably a bit of sand irritating the skin. you know, kinda like how we get zits irritation and inflammation of certain pores. just in fish, they don't have pores, but stuff still irritates it
