Something also wrong with Annabelle(update: Ich & IP)

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!
Forum rules
Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Something also wrong with Annabelle(update: Ich & IP)

Post by edmlfc1 »

She was moved from a 29G to a 125 about 4 weeks ago. There are guppies in the tank and live plants.
I got up this morning and she has one cloudy eye. As soon as the lfs opens I'll get some melafix and start treatment.
Amm. 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Ph 7.2

I do about a 25-40% water change once a week on her tank. My question is are puffers sensitive to flourish excel?
Could this have caused her cloudy eye or do you think she might have scratched in on the driftwood. She sleeps under the driftwood and burrows.

I'm starting to think there's something wrong with my water! :(

Do you have a pic of the eye? Is it just cloudy- not blood red? I have had pop eye in my tank before- cloudy bulging eye, sometimes blood in eye. The same bacteria that causes pop eye cause fin rot- check her fins. Hopefully she just scratched the eye on the driftwood.

It's just cloudy. Right now she's in a part of the tank that I can't get a good picture. I picked up melafix and pimafix, I dosed the tank with both.

oh dear.. it never rains but pours doesn't it... :(

Melafix/primafix definitely the way to go first off...

How come your nitrates are 0... do you have a very heavily planted tank?

Can you get a LFS to do a Total Dissolved Solids test (TDS) ... that will tell you if there is anything else in your water that could be a problem that you are not testing for... any metals etc.

Yes I have quite a few plants in the tank. Annabelle is only about 4" plus about 20 small guppies and about 20 plants.
I'll check my "good" lfs tomorrow when they open and see if they can test my tap for odd things. Thanks for the tip
t1gerbee.
She ate really good this morning so I know there is nothing wrong with her appepitate. She is now under a log taking her after dinner nap.

Annabelle finally came out so here are pictures of her eye.

To me it already looks better than it did this morning. I'll check her again tomorrow. I know when Cheech scratched his eye and it got cloudy it cleared up in 3 days. Keeping my fingers crossed. I can only handle one sick puffer at a time. :?

Interesting fact is, on a human the cornea is the fastest healing tissue in the body. Corneal abrasions and scratches non-visible (with floricine dye and black light) within 24 hours and are usually totally healed within 3-4 days. I wonder if that holds true for fish too.

No, I have a life, couldn't pay me enough to be an MD. I'm an RN and I work in a large Trauma ICU and do extra hours on the helicopter. Corneal abrasions and scratches are one of the most common small injuries we see, nearly every trauma patient has one due to flying glass, dirt, debris, etc. That and my wife is a retinal angiographer (takes pictures of the blood flow inside the eye) and she deals with eye stuff all day long.

Well it must be the same in fish as humans. Her eye looks a little better today. It's slowing getting back to normal. I'm hoping by tomorrow it will be clear again. I treated her tank with meds again today. This will be day 2. :D I'll update again tomorrow.

you tell annabelle she needs to behave, and that you've too much going on right now to deal with her being silly!
