My Puffy is swimming in circles....for hours and hours !!

Post by sparks42 »

Chomper, my puffer has been swimming in circles in one spot for hours... should I leave him to continue or should I intervene ?
Here's a quick video of the tank setup, and Chomps swimming in circles

Wondering is he is having fun, or going crazy ???

Typical puffer "pacing the glass".

First thing of course, is check your water, anything out of line? High nitrates generally make my puffers get really nervous/jumpy. Second, look around the tank, is there anything sitting near it that is scaring him? A bright red/pink or other bright color? He almost seems like he's trying to get away from something.

Third, you might want to put a background on the tank and some more decor.. its a pretty bare tank and that seems to make puffers a little nervous. Give him a lot more plants to swim through, provide some shelter, etc.

Yea, constantly change around the tank and add a lot of decor/plants. Puffers are smart and need change so they can explore, otherwise they start swimming around like nut cases. Actually I had a thermometer in there once and my puffer kept swimming around it in a circle until I took it away. I think he was having fun though and got sad when I took it... :D
