Amazing Colour Change (new puffer)

Hi All

Not had my Suvattii long, his name is Morphious

this isnt a bad thread mearly a observation,

But my substrate is a light sand, and i also have a dark rock made cave

the thing that i find wonderful about him, is his ability to change colour! if hes spent a while on the sand, he'll be pale and his arrow will almost dissapear!

yet if hes resting on the dark rock, or amung the plants, his arrow is very prominant! and his colouring on his back gets darker to match.

i just think he's very clever!

He's about 10cm long ish i'd say and i'm feeding him once every other day at the moment, normally one good sized muscle or a prawn, think thats enough? some times once he's had it, he'll go off and sit back down (you know what i mean), but then 5 mins later if i sit and watch him, he'll come forward and watch me back as if to beg for more. i know about over feeding so i haven't been surcomming to this begging puppy dog eyes stuff, but am i actually giving him enough?

i usually tell if my puffers have ate too much if therre belly doesnt decrease in size after about 5 hours. then again i feed them every day. Bubba about 2-5 prawns / mussels etc obv one day hell have a big feed the other just a snack. The little one a prawn a day when shes bigger ill ease her off slowly. Problem i get is because there in community tanks they tend to steal the chilids and fire eels food also but you wont have that problem ofc

He doesnt chew his food much, i keep telling him he'll get indiguestion but he doesnt listern, or cant i havent decided

i can usually see the prawn or what ever in his tummy as a lump, and as time goes on, it will change to more of a rounded belly, but just slightly, so i think he's doing ok.

And yeah he's in his own 30gal tank

Funny to hear about every ones experiences with their puffers color changes, since Homer my palembang, changes colors very quickly right after he takes his food from the tongs and then goes slowly swims back to his cave and changes back to a darker color to match the dark substrate...

Yes, the miurus is one of the best "quick-change" artists around!

Just curious...can a miurus change to just shades of their color or other colors as well? For example could Punkster change to other colors or just shades of red? I was watching a TV program about chameleons the other day and they did tests on a particular breed of chameleon. They found it can only turn shades of green, red, and black (and combinations of the colors) it couldn't turn blue, white, etc. I wonder if this type of puffer is like that as well.

I know the arrowhead I wanted at the LFS was kind of a bluish-purplish hue because the gravel they had in there was that color. I've always wondered what the original color was.

I believe they can only adjust darker or lighter--not their color exactly. Supposedly (according to Dr Ebert's book), there are seperate color morphs/varients.

I have never heard of a purple/blue suvattii. Maybe a reflection from the gravel?

Yeah, I don't know how to describe the color only that it looks like somewhere betwen blue and purple. The gravel is an aweful shade of light purple.

Yeah, he was very malnourished. They only fed him a pinch of bloodworms and kept him in a 2 gallon tank at the LFS.

Unfortunately, I took too long to think about buying him. A grandfather bought it for his 5 year old grand daughter. I hope it's still alive.
