Topaz Puffer

Post by afriars »

I was wondering if I could keep a lage Topaz Puffer in a 55 gallon with a 3 inch toby and a false clown.
I read the full grown topaz will live in full marine, do you think this will work or will I have a constant agression problem on my hands?

Thanks
Andrew

It might be a little crowded, Tetraodon fluviatilis get to be about 8" and the recommended tank size is 40gallons. And then your toby would need another 20-30gallons or so (I'm too tired to look it up, lol). So a 65-70gallon tank would be more appropriate, but you could always work in a sump to get some extra gallonage (I'm pretty sure I made that word up) and in theory it would work. I've never kept T. fluviatilis so I don't know much about their temperament, hopefully someone else will chime in with that info.

do you have the topaz already? What's him temprement like?

I have one in a 100G tank with a pair of black clowns and other fish and he is fine, but he is a mellow fellow..

you really can't assess what fish you can keep with a topaz until you have one, and have seen his agression levels..

Thanks for the replys.
I haven't bought the puffer, I just saw them at my LFS the other day.
There were 3 large (about 6 to 8 inches) puffers each $40.
I sometimes forget the stocking rules of SW are lighter then FW
My tanks looks a little empty now with a small Toby and 1 false clown.
I tried some other damsles in there but they just harrased the toby.
I would like to get another fish in there, just not sure what.

Thanks for the advice
I think I will hold off and save my money for a 120 gallon tank so I can have a porc or dogface.

great plan! In the mean time why don't you get a buddy for your clown, they always seem a lot bolder and more confident in pairs.. :-)

I had 2 topaz puffers, they were so agressive I had to give them back to shop! I later found out they had to keep them in isolation as they were litterally biting anything that it shared a tank with!!
