Arothron hispidus

Post by sandfire »

Does anyone no why Stars and Stripes Puffer come in different varieties, ie: Stars and Stripes and also Stars and No Stripes?

Colour Morph? Sex difference? Sub Species? Does any one have a theory?

Thanks Guys

Thanks Jase, that picture was taken one day when his lunch bit him back. He swam across the tank, hit the glass and curled up under the rock. It took me a while to get him out of there, I think he was mad at me. :D

Wow Elvis is identical to my Stars and No stripes Puffer.

I was chatting in the shop where I bought him from and they just sai he was from the importers TMC, its where they get all their fish from, when I got him their were a few other Stars and Stripes Puffers, he was the only one without.

The fella in the shop said he thought they might be natural hybrids. But I have seen a couple on 'Google' searches so I don't think that be correct.

Mine can be a moody Puffer too, he will only eat mussles and sulks if I give him anything else. He loves his cave and spends all day in their and only comes out in the evening.

I believe there are 2 variants. One is a Hawaiian variant and another is an Indo-Pacific variant.

Hawaiian varients do not necessarily not have stripes. I saw one last weekend with stripes while snorkeling. The aquarium has an outside exhibit with locally caught fish, their stars and stripes has stripes.

Your puffer sounds like my Elvis, in lots of ways. Mussels are his favorite food too, and if I don't feed him at least one with his other food he also sulks. :D He also loves his cave, but he's a stalker! He watches me......if he sees me move he rushes out of his cave and keeps an eye on me. If I go where he can't see me anymore he tries to look around the corners. It's totally funny. :D

Mine will not rush out his cave for me, but he comes dashing over if I have a cup in my hand! Its because he knows his food gets defrosted in one, how intelligent is that!

I'm still sad that my Manilensis is such a slow grower. He literally hasn't grown *at all* since I got him like 6 months ago. That and my Ceylons kinda pick on him 'cause they're a bunch of jerks! :(
