low salinity small puffer

Post by cro117 »

hi, i'm looking for a low salinity small puffer to go in a 20g bummble bee goby tank. i was thinking of keeping the sp around 1.002-4. would a dwarf puffer do well with that low of a level?. i don't just want a puffer to tolerat the conditions, but rather thrive, and, if possible, breed. any suggestions would be great.

Figure 8 puffers do very well at that salinity, and one singleton would be a good size for that tank.

They do not breed sucessfully in captivity as of yet though, you can not tell from external appearances if they are male or female, and a 20 gallon is not large enough for more than one.

Dwarf puffers are fully freshwater, sexable as adults and they do breed in captivity.. but I don't think they "like" any salt in their water. Those low of levels may not bother them too much, but its not their natural environment.

Otherwise, there aren't many readily available low salinity puffers, and other than the dwarves, none that you could fit more than a singleton in a 20 gallon tank.

Please no salt for DPs. I killed my 1st 3 trying that.
