Haha my 1/2 inch dwarf puffer finally showed how hardcore she can be, she was being chased by a 2 inch chinese algae eater (most annoying algae eater ever) and then my DP turned around and grabbed one of the pelvic fins and shredded it, truly amazing! I never ever thought a DP would ever challenge a fish that size, it is also weird that she schools sort of with the random cycling guppy of about an inch. Amazing! Definitly proof positive that puffers are aggressive!
Still don't know what to do with the CAE, I need an algae eating resident that gets what I miss with the suction. But all the dumb pet shops up here in rural Quebec are brutal!

I would never under estimate any puffer. QT the CAE and let it heal. Perhaps the petstore would take it from you after healed or find it a good home. Ottos are known to get along w/ DP's. It's still a risk IMO. With puffers the only true, no risk tank cleaners are the owners.

You can always look into Amano shrimp too.
Oh, and never underestimate a rural petstore, if they get their orders from a company like DAP, then you can be assured that you can find much more than just CAEs if you just ask them to order stuff in for you.

Chinese algae eaters are notorious for 1. not eating algae and 2. harassing their tankmates.
Otos are a good option, but they are very delicate and often don't survive, especially in newly setup or unstable tanks.
Bristlenose plecos are good algae eaters, but you can't keep them in small tanks, they need at least 30 gallons to be comfortable/safe with their waste output.
Siamese algae eaters are excellent algae eating fish, but are very active and get bigger.. 6" long or so. So they aren't good for small tanks.
Algae eating shrimp (amano, red cherry) are great, but will probably be a snack for your puffers. If your tank is heavily planted enough, red cherries will generally breed faster than the puffers can eat them... so they can work nicely.
