Lump on anal fin

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Lump on anal fin

Post by edmlfc1 »

I noticed this spot on Annabelle when I first got her. She is still in the 28 gallon so it would be easy to treat her. Just need to know if I should. I have been giving her prazipro for 3 days now, I soak her food in it, I have not treated the tank. Now it's the lump that I'm worried about. Below you will find some pictures. Her tank mates are guppies and fry that have been in this tank for over 8 months. The lump does not seem to be fuzzy but when I caught her I felt it to see if it would just wipe off. It seems to be hard like a rock. It dosen't seem to bother her, she's eating good, swimming and chasing the guppies.
Amm. 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10
Ph 6.6

Tank has been set up for a year, cycled with an old filter, had other fish in the tank about 10 hours before I put Annabelle in. Only fish I left in the tank were the 7 guppies which have now multiplied. I've been feeding her little bits of shrimp soaked in prazipro 2X a day to treat for IP's. She has been in the tank a little more than a week I think. Don't remember excatly what day I got her. I do a 50% W/C every week. Next water change is due on Saturday. I tried to get better pictures but my camera died and I didn't want to stress her while I got the other camera out. I have Melafix on hand, but would I need to remove all the plants?

Forgot to mention, when I first noticed the lump it looked more like a spot. I couldn't see it that well because she was staying in the back of the tank. Now it's really visible and you can tell it's a lump.

My guess it's some kind of cyst, that will probably be absorbed back into her. Let us know if it gets bigger.

Probably a cyst or tiny abscess - at that small size most likely nothing to worry about, but if it swells more or gets a reddish color, I'd consider lancing.

Thanks, I'll keep a very close eye on it. If there is any change I'll post updated pictures.
