Clove oil: scientific long term effects?

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

How do you trim without any anesthetic? I was thinking of trim the teeth underwater to avoid problems. But if the fish puff up underwater while I'm trimming? Is it safe to trim without any anesthetic?

I'm getting worried..

They didn't puff when you tried to do it with no anesthetic? Every puffer I've had to trim so far was so small I'd never be able to hold them still...

I'm one of the people who had a bad experience with Clove oil. I had a SAP and even with a daily diet of snails, he needed his teeth trimmed every few months.

Every single time, I'd use a lower dosage (originally started out with the 3 drops in a cool whip container of water), and he'd take longer and longer to wake up. The final time, he just didn't wake up. I do believe it did harm to his system over time.

One tip that was given to me that a lot of Clove Oil users don't know.. most of us tend to set aside a container just for dentistry work, because once you get clove oil on something, the smell/flavor lingers. Well, this is because the oil is still on the container, especially something porous like plastic. So if you use the same container, even after a washing, you might be giving your puffer a larger dose than you intended. So its only recommended to use glass, and not plastic, containers for dosing your fish, and to wash them extremely well until all smell is gone afterwords (then of course rinse really well so all soap is gone).

I always toss it out. Got plenty more Coolwhip containers.

Ah!!!! Do you know, I never realised that. I've been using the same, plastic, tub for all the dentistry. I do wash it out thoroughly each time, but I guess there's no way of guaranteeing there's no residue with it being plastic. Wow, I had no idea. That really is a good tip - is there any way this can be put in the article on dentistry maybe? I guess as a sort of "if you really have to use clove oil, then......"

We sure can, and should add it, I"ll try to remember to do it tonight. Use glass only and wash well afterwords, or a disposable plastic container that is thrown away after each use.
