My Figure 8 with a Spotted Climbing Perch?

Post by kaylor »

Currently my Figure 8 is a 26 gallon with a couple knight gobies, mollies and flagfish. But I'm cyling a new 30 gallon and migrating everyone but Puff into the new tank as he likes to nipp at the gobies and mollies.

I've debated added a 2nd Figure 8...but I had another thought.

I've read that the Spotted Climbing Perch (Ctenopoma acutirostre) thrives in both fresh and brackish. My LFS keeps theirs in Brackish water so I hope this is really a brackish fish. If anyone knows otherwise please let me know.

Now my question is...the SCP do eat small fish and grow to about 6 inches, but the Fig 8 is about 3 1/2 inches and if attacked could puff up. Also the SCPmales have spines on their fins...so even if the Fig 8 tried to nip at him he'd most likely only do so once and never again. Then again maybe they'll leave each other alone. Do you think these guys could co-exist?

Anyone have a similar set up?

I have not heard of them thriving in BW but I don't know, could be wrong.

Fisbase says FW fish. So does the fishbase on my favorite Norwegian forum.

I have a Ctenopoma acutirostre (roughly 3 1/2") in a 120g freshwater which I'm slowly increasing the salt in to better suit a small figure 8 I have bought. I have a backup hospital tank which I'm going to leave fresh incase things go wrong for the perch, but I've read somewhere as well that the scp would do well in slight brackish conditions and I'm going to see if it will work out well. And as far as aggression between the two the scp tailed a puffer and set up to strike once and puffer puffed and ever since it seems not so much scared as leery of any puffers or puffer like fish (I have a yellow ballon molly roughly a 1" long and it treats it as if it were the puffer).
