Some folks object to the use of any additive where the efficacy is unproven, fearing that that are being taken in by snake oil. That is always a possibility of course, but it boils down to a personal choice thing IMHO.
I have at least two practices which I cannot rigorously support with evidence from my own tanks, the use of vitamins with food, and the use of iodide for crustaceans. The latter I have enough experience with to see that it reduces my molt loses with at least a couple of genera, so I use it. The vitamins I see little or no potential for harm and hope for benefit but cannot show such.
Exactly. I happen to soak my GSP meals in vitamins before feeding and like RTR, cannot prove that it has any benefit but cannot see any harm either. I ran across a couple of articles on-line recently where the authors slammed use of supplemental vitamins in tanks as being useless and perhaps harmful to the fish. Neither of the authors offered any prove to back up their assertions/opinions.
I gut load my crickets with flake food before feeding them to my GSP. The flakes have all sorts of vitamins and such. Is this just as good? My GSP isn't big enough yet to eat the big shell stuff yet, and I wouldn't know where to get liquid fish vitamins anyway.
Interesting. ybenormal, could you PM me the links to those articles if you have them?
x0rtrunks, I honestly don't know about the flakes. I seldom use them for fish and I've never used them for crickets. I gutload my crickets with whatever fruits and vegetables I have in the fridge.
I've used carrot and apple and potato and citrus, but I've also used flake food and my SO's healthy cereals (which we will not mention to her of course).

I'll have to search again and see if I can find them. I happened to run across them while searching for the end of the Internet (one of my many hobbies), read them and moved on.
Yeah, I was gut-loading my triops with all kinds of organic veg, but it's too cold for the ugly little gets to hatch now, as I don't have a heated tank for them. Yet.
I'm giving the dudes their funny vitamin-enriched gunk blocks once a week now instead.
Pami.
