According to things that i've read about hair algae is that relatively high levels of ammonia or iron or lack of CO2 or combinations of all 3 can cause it. the forum below has many good articles on algae and how to combat it:

I've never had hair algae but my most heavily planted and most intensively lit tank struggles with BGA. I've used a manual CO2 cannister for a while now and since I started using it my plants grew better but i didn't notice the amount of algae reducing (probably because i leave the house 4 hours before the lights come on and so most of the CO2 has escaped before the lights come on). I've started to dose easycarbo (liquid carbon) for the last 2 weeks and i've noticed that my algae doesn't grow as quickly and the plants are growing much faster. I'm thinking about going to an automated CO2 injection system to help further but i'm worried that my PH and water hardness may drop too much.

You and Your molly are too funny! My guess is the molly probably eats algae and that is why you do not see the molly eat much. Guppies do the same thing...lol I never seen anything like it before.

Have you checked out http://www.plantgeek.net yet? I have learned some there about plant keeping. Plants are harder then I thought they would be...even the easy plants are complicated for me .
