Dogface & Stars & Stripes

Post by dab335 »

Hey, looking for a tankmate for our dogface puffer Frank, would a stars and stripes work well? I hear they have the same laid back personality as a dogface, is that true?

That depends how big your tank is. A. Hispidus get to be pretty large and require quite a bit of tank space, so combining it with another large puffer may cause you problems.

You'd have to wait for some responses of people who have a bit more experience with the Hispidus and Dogface puffers, though. ^_^

I have a S&S with 2 GSP's and he dosen't bother them at all. If your tank is large enough I don't think you would have a problem.

According to the profile of the S&S puffer in our Pufferpedia:

Will eventually need a huge tank due to its size, 300+ gallon tanks are highly recommended.

Minimum Tank Size: 180 US Gallons (670 liters)

S&S get pretty big by the sounds of it, so I'd only get both if you're going to add a huge sump and eventually upgrade your tank in the future.

Be sure you have the funds (do some research as to what a 300+g system will cost you) & find out if your floor can handle the weight, before you consider getting into this. A lot of things can come up, preventing the purchase of a larger tank.

I second making sure your floor can handle the weight of larger tanks. We have had to put floor jacks under our house to support some of our systems.

Floor jacks? Well down here in the south we do not have basements but crawl spaces so we have to put something under the house to keep the weight of the larger tanks from breaking through the floor. My house currently is not new (made in the 70's) so we do not have the concrete foundation flooring that some of the newer manufactured houses have. Just placing the jacks under the house where the tanks are help give the extra support needed. :D

With full basements, you'd use support posts and/or beams to accomplish a similar effect. I'd get some recommendations from a trusted contractor if you aren't familiar with it, though. ;)
